Therrus eyed the snacks neatly aligned on the table and considered grabbing something before deciding that he was too nervous to find the food appealing. For now, he should just make his way to a corner. He turned and nearly collided with a young woman, almost sending the snacks on her plate tumbling.
βOh!β He yelped and tried to step around her. Unfortunately, heβd stepped to the very side she had gone to avoid him.
She said something that sounded like a curse, though strangely Therrus couldn’t understand it. He would have to get his translator looked at. It should know all human tongues.
She stepped the other way at the exact same time as him. The dance continued for a few moments until both parties stopped entirely.
After a beat, the stranger giggled and said in a deep voice, βYou shall not pass!β
βWha-why?β
The woman startled. Her pale skin took on a shade of red.
βNo, Iββ she replied in a different voice. βSorry, itβs a movie reference. Iβm Ginny. Hi.β
βOh, nice to meet you,β Therrus greeted. βIβm Luke. Like, βLuke, I am your father.’β
Ginny blinked. βWait, are you Luke or is your son Luke? Both? Is it an ancestral name?β
βOh, no, thatβsβ¦ also a movie quote,β Therrus stammered. Suddenly, he remembered the standard greeting drilled into all who visited Earth. He stuck out his hand.
Ginny blinked at it. Therrus worried heβd done it wrong somehow until she brightened with an βOh!β and shook his hand.
She eyed his hand. βWoah! You have six fingers! Ha!β Ginny brandished a small sliver of wood that had been embedded in one of her snacks. βMy name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.β
βWhat?β Therrus stepped away. βI-I didn’t kill anyone! I thought your name was Ginny!β
She faltered. βNo, itβ¦ it’s from The Princess Bride? You know, the six fingered man?β
βIβ¦ don’t know what that is.β
βAnother movieβ¦β
Ginny bit her lip and looked down at the snack table, giving Therrus a chance to observe her. She was a bit shorter than him, thin and willowy with eyes the brightest shade of green he’d ever seen. As someone who had studied Earthen flora it reminded him of sun filtered through leaves. She also had long hair as close to gold as heβd ever seen tucked beneath a beanie. The hat had shifted during their back and forth and now revealed one ear that was much pointier than those heβd observed on other humans. He hesitated to point it out. Humans were very picky about some physical observations, but he could never quite place where those limits were. Sheβd mentioned his fingers though, so maybe it was okay to point out unusual extremities.
In the end, he simply didn’t have the willpower to avoid making a joke. βI like your ears. Are you part Vulcan?β
She dropped her plate on the table and yanked her hat down so that it covered her exposed ears. βUm, what?β
Therrus grimaced with the realization that he had in fact committed a social error. βVulcans? Star Trek? Live long and prosper?β
“Another movie quote?β
βEr, kinda. More TV shows, but there are moviesβ¦ Sorry.β
βNo i-it’s fine. I like that one. It reminds me of Elrondβs blessing. βMay the stars shine upon your faces.ββ
βI do like that. Maybe you can tell me more about your movies. I would love to expand my studiesβer, I mean, my watch list.β
βSure! You can tell me about yours, too. Can you try to find a seat while I get a drink?β She gestured at the furniture scattered across the room.
βDo or do not, there is no try,β Therrus responded as he veered toward a pair of unoccupied armchairs. Ginny joined him a moment later, carrying a cup and a snack plate laden with fruits and vegetables.
She had barely sat down when Janiceβthe enthusiastic event host who had welcomed Therrus when heβd come inβappeared out of nowhere. βOh, I couldn’t have set this up better if I tried! You two have so much in common! If you hadnβt found each other I would have matchmade before long. Don’t forget to pick up coupons for our corporate partners before you go. Weβve had plenty of places sign up that make for the perfect first date! Well, I won’t keep you. Ta-ta!β
She left just as suddenly as sheβd appeared but left behind a rush of panic in Therrus’s Civaran stomach. He was hit with the realization that the βSingles Mixer’ he was attending was not geared toward βmeeting plenty of new and exciting strangers’ as the advertisements had claimed. It was part of the human mating ritual!
He turned to Ginny, apologetic, only to see a mirrored expression on her face as though she was coming to the same conclusion.
Maybe it wasn’t too bad of a mistake if even human Ginny didn’t realize what this was. When the girl seemed to get over her surprise, her face started to turn a dark red again. βWell, if you do want to go somewhere else, I saw a coupon for a vegan place near the old growth forest outside of town. I practically grew up there, so I could show you the best parts, and we could get dinner afterward.β
Therrus was going to get in so much trouble if the Earthan Initiative ever heard about this. Still, he couldn’t help but smile back tentatively. βI saw another coupon for the ice cream place by the planetarium. Maybe go there for dessert and see the stars after?β
She smiled back and took Therrusβs hand, leading him toward the coupon table. βAs you wish,β she said with the cadence heβd begun to realize accompanied a quote.
While her exact words didnβt fit, Therrus knew there was only one quote he could give in reply. He gave his best intergalactic smuggler smirk and replied, βI know.β

Loved all the quotes, characters very likeable and interesting. Would be very interested to see the short story develop into a sci-fi novel. Keep up with the story writing, you have a tremendous gift for engaging the reader.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad that you found the character and story so engaging! I had a lot of fun picking out quotes to put! Thank you for reading!!
This was so fun!!! I loved the awkwardness between Therrus and Ginny and all the amazing movie quotes! Amazing story! π

Oh wait I just read your bio and saw that this is your first time publishing with Havok!!! π€© Welcome to the family! π₯³ Havok is the first place I was published outside of fanfiction as well, and over the years the editors have helped me grow my writing in so many ways. This was a fabulous start, and I hope you submit more stories with us in the future! π«Άπ»
Thank you so much!! I am so glad you liked my story!! And thank you for the welcome! I am so excited to be a part of it. Writing this has been so much fun, and I’m glad to see a fellow fanfiction writer also moved here. I can’t wait to grow with the editors and definitely plan to submit more. Thank you!
This was so cute! You did a great job at developing both characters – I loved the mystery around Ginny’s background with her pointed ears and a love for the woods…hmm! I thought it was hilarious that both characters didn’t realize they were at a dating event π
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun with Ginny and adding the hints of mystery about who (or what) she is. I am so glad you found it cute and fun! Thank you for reading!
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked it, thank you for reading!
My favourite part was when Ginny said “I saw a coupon for a vegan place […] we could get dinner afterward.β, a subtle nod to the fact that the offerings at vegan restaurants don’t qualify as food.
What a pair!
Thank you so much for reading my story! I’m glad you enjoyed the couple!
Love it! It’s funny and well done and full of great movie (and TV!) references – love how you developed the characters and plot. And welcome to the Havok family.
Thank you! I had a lot of fun finding ways to fit my favorite phrases and sayings into my story and making them fit the conversation. I am so glad you enjoyed them! Thank you for the warm welcome, it seems like a wonderful family to be a part of.
