âBow-Shock, your arrow-neous ways are off target! Seeing you quiver before justice is my aim!â Arms akimbo, I stand astride the ledge of the shattered window of the jewelry store.
Clad in a neon-green jumpsuit, Bow-Shock responds to my o-pun assault with a hail of arrows.
I backflip over the onslaught, my purple cape furling behind my orange bodysuit. âYou archer making this difficââ
Smash! Oops, didnât see that traffic light. Head impaled, I dangle above the intersection, seeing red at such a green mistake.
Cocking his yellow fedora, Bow-Shock strides onto the sidewalk with a sinister chuckle. âYouâve left your headlights on, do-gooder!â He levels another arrow at me, savoring his moment. âHa-ha-ha! Ah-ha-ha-ha! Ah-ha-haâoof!â
âAnd in an amazing display of teamwork, Super Gus distracted Bow-Shock while Rad-i-Gal subdued him with a bus stop bench. Evil is defeated againâbut for how long? Iâm Cindy Solicitous for Adver City Super Six News.â
The newscast cuts back to a pompadoured anchorman in the studio. I turn my attention to my new colleague and friend, with whom Iâm sharing an appetizer platter at the Justice Lounge.
Rad-i-Gal, clad in violet spandex, claims the last shrimp roll. âHe just had to go for that third maniacal laugh.â Her blue eyes sparkle through her scarlet, butterfly-shaped domino mask, framed by bushy raven hair. âIngenious, crashing into that traffic light. Even I thought it was a mistake at first.â
I clear my throat. âWell, if you stop to think about it, youâll go light-headed.â
A passing guy in a green turtleneck calls out. âHey, you two were just on TV!â He clangs a spoon against his glass. âEveryone, we have some distinguished guests tonight. Cheers to the heroes of the hour, Rad-i-Gal and her trusty sidekick, Super Gus!â
The patrons of the Lounge raise their drinks. A few clap and cheer.
Turtleneck leans close, and I wince from his halitosis. âYou two were awesome. What do I call you guys, Rad-i-Gus? Is that a thing? We should make it a thing.â
Rad-i-Gal straightens up. âSir, weâve just met in the line of duty tonight.â
I nod. âYesâand Iâm no sidekick. Not since Zoomer-Bang.â
Turtleneckâs eyes widen. âYou kicked for the legendary Zoomer-Bang? What, like, when Whipsaw was sick?â
âNo, before Whipsaw. I was Zoomer-Bangâs first sidekick.â
Turtleneck whistles in amazement. âWell, Iâll be a holy cheese. Here I thought sidekicks had it easy. I even had it as a backup career option if things donât work out at the Mini-Mart.â
I chuckle. âOh, no. Nothingâs easy about sidekicking. Itâs a very intenseââ
âDidnât know sidekicks could get fired.â
I scowl. âI wasnât fired.â
Palms up, Turtleneck backs away. âSorry, my bad. Downsized.â He drifts off into the happy hour crowd.
âNo, it wasnât like that.â I call after him. âI was a very good sidekick!â Springing up, I jolt my chair backward. âI kicked so much side, Iâve still got blisters on myââ
Rad-i-Gal taps my shoulder. âEasy, Gus. We captured the villain. Thatâs the important thing, isnât it? Why do you care what some rando thinks about you?â She lowers her voice. âRemember, you canât be a superhero until youâre super here, oh?â She places a pink-gloved hand over her heart.
Mouth agape, I stare at her.
She grins. âThatâs free advice.â After fishing under her neckline, she pulls out a tenner and sets it next to the marinara-streaked platter. âSee you around, Super Fuss!â
Free advice? More like my advice. From âHeroes 101: Your Alias and You,â my Learning Annex course last year. Maybe I shouldnât have put it on TruTube.
Am I a has-flown already? Iâd thought my career was taking off. I brought down Frau von Festerfeld. Frau von freaking Festerfeld!
Well, with some help from Zoomer-Bang.
Okay, a lot of help.
Oh, who am I kidding? ZB let me hold the rope.
Dejected, I stare at the empty platter until a waitress clears it away.
Reaching for my wallet, I rise. âOne second, Miss. I owe youââ
She cuts me off with a wink. âNever mind, youâre square. Your friend settled.â She heads for the kitchen.
I start after her. âHold on there. I donât need her charity.â
An imposing figure in a blue bodysuit slides into my path. âReally? I thought charity was one of our core values.â
Stepping back from the Z-shaped lightning bolt across her chest, I gasp. âZoomer-Bang!â
My old mentor smiles broadly. âSeeing you on the news today rekindled fond memories. Letâs talk in private.â
In a vacant party room, Zoomer-Bang produces a clipboard and pen. âI have something Iâd like you to sign, Arnold.â
Thatâs right, Arnold. Not Gus. Folks, itâs called a secret identity for a reason.
Smirking, I give her a dismissive wave. âAw, Christy, you donât have to be ashamed about wanting my autograph!â I take the clipboard and squint at its fine print. âWait, this is an application for a sidekick-ship!â
ZB shrugs. âIâd forgotten what a valuable team member I had in you, Arnold. And I know youâve been struggling on your own. I mean, honestly. From Frau von Festerfeld toâŚâ She stifles a giggle. ââŚBow-Shock? I really think this could be a win-win.â
I shake my head. âI thought Iâd left that life behind⌠Now Iâm going back?â
She falters. âWell, uh, not exactly.â
I study the formâs verbiage more closely. âWhipsaw wants a sidekick?â
ZB shrugs. âSheâs awesome, but she wouldnât know a pun if you served a hamburger in it.â
Slamming the clipboard down, I slump onto a chaise lounge.
Sighing deeply, ZB sits next to me. âArnold, old friend, think about this.â She puts an arm around my shoulder. âYou havenât read paragraph twelve yet.â
I peek at that section. âProfit sharing?â
âI can finally pay per-pun commissions.â
I seize the pen. âThatâs a good sign!â

Quite hilarious đ! I don’t know how you do it story after story! However, I realized that Stan Lee’s Spider-Man was always good for a pun after wrapping up a bad guy, so you’re in good company.
Thanks! So glad you liked it!
The puns in these stories are always amazing. đ
Thanks! They are great fun to write.

So many puns lol. Fun story!
The puns are awesome! Reminds me of Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
