Mr. Reliable

By Rachel Dib

โ€œI canโ€™t find him!โ€ Becca yanked Mark into her apartment and snapped the door shut. โ€œIโ€™ve looked everywhere!โ€

Mark furrowed his brow. The living room had been rearranged into a wide-open space with the couch, wicker chair, and TV all lined up against the wall next to each other. Thatโ€™s not very convenient. Maybe itโ€™s a feng shui thing?

โ€œWatch where you step.โ€ Becca rubbed her neck as she swept her gaze around the space. โ€œI think heโ€™s currently the size of a cricket.โ€

โ€œWait, what?โ€

โ€œZeus!โ€ Becca strode from the room and returned a moment later carrying a pink hairdryer-shaped object. She shoved the item into Markโ€™s arms. โ€œI shrunk him! Now I canโ€™t find him, and I need to be at my internship in, like, twenty minutes.โ€

โ€œYou what?โ€

Becca flung out her arms. โ€œIt was an accident! My mom gave me the Re-sizer Ultram for my birthday. I was trying to shrink a cheeseburgerโ€”you know, make it less caloriesโ€”but Zeus jumped in the way.โ€ She shook her head, eyes tearing up. โ€œAnd then he skittered off somewhere. His translation collar is still on, so I hear him talking sometimes butโ€ฆโ€

Mark shuffled his feet uncomfortably as a single tear trickled down Beccaโ€™s cheek. He cleared his throat. โ€œSo, um, you called me here to find your cat?โ€

โ€œYeah. Didnโ€™t I mention that on the phone?โ€

โ€œNo. You just said you had an emergency.โ€

โ€œA cricket-sized Zeus is an emergency!โ€

Mark sighed. โ€œRight.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll find him, wonโ€™t you?โ€ Becca asked, her eyes filling again. โ€œThe Re-sizer is easy to operate. You just point and pull this trigger.โ€ She touched a knob on the deviceโ€™s side. โ€œThis adjusts size, but I think I already have it set correctly.โ€

Mark frowned. โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€

She leaned forward and kissed his cheek. โ€œThanks! Youโ€™re a lifesaver!โ€

His shoulders slumped. โ€œHappy to help,โ€ he muttered.

Becca tiptoed across the room, scanning the floor as she went. The front door clicked shut behind her.

Mark scanned the carpet. A cricket-sized Zeus. Great. He was bad enough normal-sized. Swiping a hand through his hair, Mark eased himself down onto the couch.

โ€œYou lied,โ€ a squeaky voice piped up.

Mark straightened. โ€œZeus?โ€

โ€œYou are mating my human! Stinky-foot liar!โ€

Mark lifted a throw pillow. โ€œNope. Iโ€™m still not dating Becca. I just somehow get caught up in her problems.โ€

โ€œShe calls you โ€˜reliable.โ€™โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ He set the pillow back down. โ€œExplains the friendzone, I guess.โ€

โ€œBut then, she kissed you.โ€

โ€œShe was being friendly.โ€ Mark leaned forward to peek under the couch but couldnโ€™t see far enough back. โ€œThatโ€™s all. Just friendly.โ€ Unfortunately.

The cat didnโ€™t respond.

Mark slid down from the couch onto his hands and knees. โ€œZeus?โ€

โ€œYou crawl like a dog. I hate dogs.โ€

Sighing, Mark shifted to sitting cross-legged. โ€œZeus, will you please come out?โ€

โ€œDogs beg.โ€

Clenching his teeth, Mark closed his eyes and growled in frustration.

โ€œDogs growl.โ€

โ€œLook, is there anything I can do that will persuade you to come out?โ€ Mark forced calm into his tone. โ€œBecause Iโ€™d really rather be home right now.โ€

When Mark had been sitting long enough that his leg started to cramp, he gave up on receiving an answer. He shifted back to his knees.

โ€œYes.โ€

Pursing his lips, Mark settled back down, his arm draped over one leg. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou must get rid of my humanโ€™s mate. Then I will come out.โ€

Mark blinked. โ€œBecca has a boyfriend?โ€ Then why am I the one saddled with finding the cat?

โ€œI hate him. He smells of smoke and musses my fur.โ€

โ€œSounds horrible.โ€ Mark blew out his cheeks. โ€œLook, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œOuch!โ€

A slight movement caught Markโ€™s eye, and he slowly turned his head. A paperclip-sized Himalayan was scratching his back atop the TV stand.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked evenly, shifting the Re-sizer in his hand.

โ€œThe human smoke cloud has given me fleas.โ€

Biting his lip, Mark tilted the Re-sizer. I hope this thing is accurate.

Zeus caught Markโ€™s eye. Mark pressed the button. A moment later, the micro cat was scurrying away from a rapidly enlarging television.

Mark scrambled to his feet as the TV crashed to the floor. Carefully aiming the Re-sizer, Mark watched Zeusโ€™s escape trajectory. The cat leapt toward the wicker chairโ€™s arm, and Mark clicked the button again.

โ€œGotcha!โ€

Like the television, the cat began to grow. Unlike the TV, Zeus didnโ€™t stop.

โ€œWhat theโ€ฆโ€ Mark checked the Re-sizerโ€™s setting and swallowed. Thatโ€™s a big number.

Just as the top of Zeusโ€™s head brushed the ceiling, the front door clicked open behind Mark. He turned as a young man sporting golf attire walked inside. The scent of cigar smoke wafted in after him.

Mark narrowed his eyes. Jacob Courtier. Becca is dating Jacob Courtier? Really?

Jacob slipped off his sunglasses and glanced Mark over. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

Before Mark could answer, Zeus twitched. Jacobโ€™s eyes focused on the cat. He spat out a rude word and took a step back, flattening himself against the doorjamb.

Zeus glanced from the intruder to Mark. He licked his jowls. โ€œOh, you ordered lunch. Smells burnt.โ€

As Jacob scrambled out the door, Mark cranked the Re-sizerโ€™s setting back to where Becca had positioned it and pressed the button. Zeus instantly began to shrink.

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s going to be fun to explain.โ€ Mark flicked his gaze to Zeus. โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll leave that task to you.โ€

The cat glared up from his normal height. โ€œYou should have let me eat him.โ€

Mark lifted a brow. โ€œDid you really want to eat something that smelled like that?โ€

Zeus turned away, tail poofy and erect as he padded from the room. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t think so.โ€ Mark smirked. โ€œBut if it makes you feel any better, you scared him off. I doubt heโ€™ll be back.โ€

Zeus paused in the doorway, ears pricked in interest. He rubbed his face against the doorframe. โ€œNow, if I could only get rid of you.โ€
