Am I content to float alone?
In this vast universe, Iāve only known one other of my kindāmy motherāand I only knew her for mere minutes before she vanished without a trace. I searched the entire perimeter of this water-based planet for her to no avail. Did she leave because her time was over when my existence came to be? Or am I having an existential crisis again?
Iām⦠not content to float. Alone.
I need excitement. Adventure! I need to feel alive.
No, I need someone like me to pass the years with as I drift around this planetās rings.
Maybe I donāt have anyone like me because I deserve this loneliness.
Feeling myself going down a depressing path, I dive into the atmosphere of the planet and glide down to the surface of the great green oceans.
āOlti!ā calls the little creature below the waves. Iām not sure why the creature picked that name for a great big space jellyfish like me, but I like it.
āLittle one,ā I say. āHow goes it?ā
The creature, which I call Dru, has long red hair and only two limbs. Dru is nice enough, but since it is stuck in the water, our relationship is limited.
Dru bobs along with the waves, something like worry etched in its eyebrowsāI think. I canāt hope to accurately read emotion based on my limited interaction with its kind.
āOlti, weāve picked up a signal. There are humans on their way,ā it says.
āWhat is a human? Are they kind like you and your people?ā The thought of meeting a new creature dismantles my monotonous contentment. Is this excitement?
āHumans are why youāre the last Great Blue-Bellied Jelly,ā Dru whispers.
I deflate. āWhat do you mean?ā
āThereās a human rumor that your jelly-layer will make a man immortal.ā
āThese creatures⦠eat space jellyfish?ā I ask, incredulous. I feel nauseous. I want nothing more than to go back to circling the rings of this planet in ignorance of these evil space creatures.
Another creature pokes its head out of the water. Itās Iczes, Druās relative. āOlti, you should drift away from this planet, find somewhere to hide from the humans.ā
āBut how can something like me hide?ā I gesture to my giant gelatinous form with two blue tentacles.
āPlease, Olti. Hurry!ā says Dru.
I gape at the two creatures. Reality slowly dawns.
I could be eaten!
āThank you for warning me,ā I say as I begin to sail back up into the atmosphere.
āTake care, Olti!ā yells Iczes.
I sigh as I re-enter space. I should have gotten more information about these human creatures. Humans must be largeāeven larger than meāwith great teeth that can slice through to my inner jelly! I shudder, sending ripples of electricity through my tentacles.
I wonder if humans are immune to electricity. They must be if theyāve eaten my kind into extinction. Another shiver runs through me.
In the distance, I see a small green dot. It quickly gets bigger as I stare. Is this the human? I panic, propelling myself in the opposite direction as fast as I can. I want to go back to floating aimlessly. I donāt want excitement. I donāt want to become human food!
I feel the creature creeping closer. I canāt outrun it.
What will my death feel like? Will I finally understand what my mother felt when she disappeared?
No, I wonāt think like that. Iāve got to stay and fight!
I turn and face the human. It is largeāmuch larger than Dru or Iczes, but smaller than meādark green, and ugly. It almost has a shimmer to it as its skin reflects distant stars. It rumbles low as it moves toward me.
āStay back!ā I call. āOr Iāll electrocute you!ā Waves of electricity jolt down my tentacles.
The human hovers in front of me. I donāt think it understands. But maybe it does? It isnāt moving any closer.
A mouth opens on the creature. I expect to see rows of angry teeth, but instead a little blue blob exits. Itās smaller than Dru, who is already quite petite.
Itāsāitās a space jellyfish, like me!
It floats to me timidly.
I canāt contain my bubbling awe and wonder. āHello! Iām Olti. Whatās your name?ā
āHi, Olti. The humans call me Penelope,ā says the jelly in an airy, sing-song fashion.
Slowly, the human backs away. I donāt trust it, but Iām enraptured by Penelopeās presence. āThe human brought you here? It didnāt try to eat you?ā
Her voice wavers. āThese humans, the Federated Corps, Battalion M-83, Science Divisionāāshe gestures to the human that deposited herāāsaved me when my family was attacked by poachers. They said they could take me to my kind, and here you are!ā
Penelope rushes toward me and envelops me with her tentacles, her small frame nearly covered by one of my own tentacles. I feel something new within meāis this hope?
I watch in awe as the supposedly vicious human creatureāthe one that brought me Penelopeābegins to leave. The human had the potential to destroy us, but chose mercy instead.
Now, Iām truly content to float. No longer alone.

That was so cute! (And I’m not normally a fan of jellyfish! LOL!) Well done! š
I’m so glad you liked it! :)
I love the jellies!! XD
I love watching jellyfish when I go the aquarium. With the Animal Kingdom theme, I knew I wanted to incorporate jellyfish in a story somehow. I thought, “What if they lived in space and were huge?” Then this piece was born Lol
Neat story! The space jellyfish perspective was very creative!
Thank you! :) I love jellyfish and wondered what would happen if they lived in space. Then this story was born Lol
let’s read more about this cool realm!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I may have to write more about Olti and Penelope and their world :)

I’m so glad you love it! Thank you for all of your support, friend! <3
Depression. Desire. Fear. Hope. All such raw and real emotions ā and eloquently and succinctly described. How can something 1000 words or less make me feel so many things? Wonderfully written. <3
This comment has made my heart SO happy! Thank you, thank you! <3
What a great story! A roller-coaster of emotions packed into Olti’s story :)
I’m so glad you liked it! Writing Olti’s story was a lot of fun :)

Awww I love the message of this story ā¤
I’m so glad to hear that! <3
Love this descriptive story. I have always been fascinated by jelly fish. I could see each character as I was reading. A story is powerful to me as I visualize the setting and characters as I read.
