Secret Agent Lampshade

By Cassandra Hamm

No one notices a lamp. Like, you wouldn’t look at the lamp in your living room and think, “Wow, I really need to watch what I say.”

Of course not. You’d say whatever the heck you wanted.

That’s why I’m currently on Senator Harold Altenstein’s coffee table, listening to him explain every detail of the soon-to-be-attempted presidential assassination. It’s the only useful thing about being able to shapeshift into a lamp—you can hear people’s secrets.

“President Costigan is always in his private hot tub at 8:30,” Altenstein says to the woman beside him.

Female henchmen are rare. It’s kind of nice seeing something out of the ordinary. Maybe she’s Altenstein’s wife, though I doubt it, what with her leather jacket and pale dreadlocks.

But who am I to stereotype? I mean, who would look at my thrift store clothes and think, “Wow, that is one epic guy. I bet he’s an FBI agent”? Which is sort of the point. My work is top secret.

“The guard will be your job,” Altenstein says.

The woman cracks her tattooed knuckles with a predatory grin. “It’ll be my pleasure.”

Seriously, what is their problem? I’m not crazy about all the laws President Costigan has passed recently, but I don’t want to kill him. Though, if I hadn’t made a plea deal with the FBI, I’d be chilling in a jail cell right now with Rachael.

The woman’s night-dark eyes flicker my direction. Her lips purse in a frown. “Hey, Harry, is that your lamp?”

Why is she noticing me? That’s not supposed to happen.

“You know I don’t like it when you call me that, Tamara.” The senator’s voice is tight. “I don’t remember that particular lamp. Some intern probably put it in.”

“It’s unplugged.”

Yeah, well, I can’t move, so I can’t exactly plug my cord in. Inanimate object problems.

Tamara runs her hand along the inside of my shade, then my wooden base. Rude. Hasn’t she heard of personal space?

“No bugs. Huh.” She jabs my plug into the outlet.

Electricity floods through the cord, zapping my brain. Holy crap. I forgot how much that hurts.

“Whatever.” Tamara turns toward the door. “Meet you there.”

Wait. Does that mean the assassination is today?

That thought vanishes as Tamara’s body shrinks and golden feathers replace her leather clothing.

What the heck? She’s a shifter, too?

“Remember, follow the plan.” Altenstein pries open a window, and Tamara the hawk flies through with a screech.

No wonder she hates the president. He wants her in jail.

Okay, yeah, President Costigan is pretty dang harsh toward us shifters. He’s got my sister in jail, my sweet little sister whose turtle powers mean she isn’t threatening anyone. But I don’t really blame him after that crazy wolf lady killed his daughter. I’d go ballistic if anyone hurt Rachael. Still, Tamara is like me—with a way cooler shifter form and being hunted by the FBI. No shifter deserves to rot behind bars, whether they have tattoos or pigtails.

Altenstein exits through the front door, leaving me alone in his house.

Okay, human time. My wood changes to flesh and blood, and electricity jolts through my body. I scream like a baby and yank my hand from the outlet.

Seriously, did Tamara really have to plug me in?

Groaning, I force my stunned muscles to obey me and crawl toward the door. That’s it. Ignore the pain. You’ve got this, Craig. Do it for Rachael.

Of course, getting to the White House is going to be tough. Why the heck do we only get one shifting form, and why did I get stuck with a lamp? Like, a bird would be super nice right now.

The doorknob turns. I frantically change back into the lamest of forms.

Altenstein walks in, grumbling. Seriously? Why can’t villains take everything with them the first time they walk out the door?

He frowns down at me. “The lamp.”

Okay, just get back to your super-important mission, please. Stop staring at me.

He drops to his knees. His nose grows and darkens, changing into something moist, ringed with dark fur. Another shifter? Great.

His huge nostrils flare as he breathes in the telltale scent of magic.

“Spy!” His massive bear paws slam against me, knocking my lampshade off. Hey! That’s mine!

His claws crush my bulb. Fiery pain blazes through my consciousness. I would scream if I had a mouth.

Altenstein eyes the broken glass and sniffs me one more time. Then the fur sinks into his skin, his form reverting to the loyal senator. He walks out the door without a glance back.

I shift into human form. My head feels like it’s being stabbed again and again. I think I have a concussion, not that I can really think right now. But I can taste blood. First electrocution, now this?

I can’t do this. I’m just not cut out for it. Costigan gave me a shot to change his mind, to show him that not all shifters are bad, and I’m blowing it.

If Costigan dies, it’ll just make things worse for us—the media will never let go of the fact that shifters killed the president. Rachael will never leave her cell—she might even die.

If I don’t find a way to stop Altenstein, I’ll never forgive myself. When Rachael was taken away, I just stood there, useless as a lamp. I won’t make that mistake again.

I push myself onto my shaking legs and grab the wall for support, then pull out my phone—fried from the electrocution. Of course. When did I start crying?

Hand over hand, I drag myself along the wall and peer into the kitchen. Thank goodness old-fashioned senators still have home phones.

With singed, trembling fingers, I yank the phone from its hook and dial. It rings twice.

“Hello? Who is this?”

“President Costigan.” My voice is a whisper. “It’s Lampshade. You’re in danger.”

The lamp is no longer useless.

  • OHHH HOW FUNNN!!! I love this story, Cassie. A lampshade secret agent is GENIUS. I love the power in that last line. I hope we’ll get to see more of this secret agent ;-)

  • Superb!

I love exploring “non-flashy” super powers. Lampshade is that much more captivating of a hero because he can’t shift into anything big and powerful. He doesn’t have super strength or a magic hammer. He has his lamp form and his wits to get by on.

    Well done Cassie!

    • Thank you, Andrew!! Yeah, that’s a really good point. I’m glad he was a captivating character. :D

  • Aah, this is amazing, Cassie!! The idea of someone shifting into an inanimate object is hilarious!

  • I love this, Cassandra! It’s so creative and unique. I love Craig’s personality, and I kind of feel bad for him. I mean, electrocution and getting smashed by another shape-shifter?? The poor guy :(

    • Thanks, Kristianne! :D yeah, poor guy :( but I’m glad you loved his personality!! I love him too. XD

  • SUCH a brilliant concept! I would never have come up with this, but it’s pure genius and I love it. And your descriptions of electrocution made me wince, too. ;D

    • Thank you so much!! :D I’m glad you thought so! I’ll admit that the idea was sparked by a conversation I had in high school–where one of my friends told me she would want the power of shapeshifting into a lamp so she could hear people’s secrets. But I don’t think she anticipated that long-past conversation to turn into this ;) Good, that’s what they were supposed to do. ;D

  • I love this!! It has so much energy. About midway through I was thinking “when is she going to write a full book about this character because I would totally read it!” It was spunky and fun with a sense of danger. All in all, a great read!

  • AHhhh this is so GOOD!! I absolutely LOVE this story! The character’s voice is GOLD, and the concept about shifters and his power to change into a lampshade is so cool.

  • “Hasn’t she heard of personal space?”

    “Hey! That’s mine!”

Oh man, this is great. I love personification, and who indeed would expect an unassuming lamp to be a spy? And his sister is just a turtle! Would definitely like to see more stories in this universe!

    • Yesss, some of my favorite quotes! XD so glad you enjoyed it, Danielle!! I guess I will have to write more stories in this universe, then. ;)

  • YES Cassandra!!! This is such a good story! I was engaged from the first line all the way to the last, and the in between was riveting. I love the unique idea of such an ordinary object becoming the basis for your main character. Can I hope to see a part 2??? 😉 Very well written, I love it!

  • Great story, Cassie! I hope Costigan can get over his loss someday and free the good shifters. :(

  • This was a great read! The first line had me hooked. I had to see how a lamp shifter panned out and I wasn’t disappointed!

  • I LOVE THIS!!! It’s so original and fun! Absolutely brilliant idea! 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  • Ooooh my goodness. This was a RIOT!!! What a creative superpower. XDD And I loved Craig and his longsuffering acceptance of his ability. Such a fun story! It definitely put a smile on my face today.

  • Heh heh…
    That was funny.
And surprisingly exciting – who knew that a lamp could see so much action?
    Love the worldbuilding :D

    • Thank you!! Haha, who knew, right?! XD glad you enjoyed the worldbuilding and the story!!

  • Cassie,
I think this is one of my favorite things you’ve ever written. Right up there with Oswald and the squirrel crossing! :D Such strong, authentic character voice. And it’s hilarious. You’re getting better and better!

    • Aw, thank you so much, Marit :D yes, nothing can quite top Squirrel Crossing. ;) I’m so glad you enjoyed Lampshade!!

  • I LOVE THIS! It’s such a unique idea and so well done! Great job Cassie! ☺️This (as always) was such a pleasure to read and I hope to see more of this story!

  • Bravo, Cassie! As usual, this was a fantastic read. I was thoroughly entertained from the first word to the last. This was such a great twist on the superhero/espionage genre. I want a whole book like this! . . . Please. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the wonderful work! ^_^

    • Thank you!! I’m so glad you enjoyed my twist on the genre :D I guess I may have to write something else about Craig… we’ll see about a whole book, though. ;)

  • I love how the mundane powers of this shapeshifter turn out to be the one that will save the day.

  • This was one of my favorite Wacky Wednesday stories! I love how ordinary this character is. He doesn’t shapeshift into anything crazy cool, but in the end, the lamp is no longer useless. Take that! Also, the voice and tone in this story is so unbelievable delightful. When I read it the first time, it totally brightened my day!

  • Wow, that unique and funny! A shifter that shifts into a lampshade…classic! Great job.

  • This is so unique! I absolutely love the concept! And I love how you write, it’s breathtaking!

  • THOSE TWISTS! Totally didn’t see that coming. I would love to see another story with more shifter characters!

  • I ADORE this story and this quirky fun character! The lamp is no longer useless was an epic ending! I was so happy with this Wacky Wednesday. One of my all-time favorites in this genre!

    • Thank you! Oh, I’m sorry you didn’t understand that last line! It’s supposed to be that his power actually had a use now. But I’m glad you enjoyed the story anyway :)

  • This was more fun than I was prepared for. Also, the opening lines were superb. Yes. I never thought I’d be invested in the story of a lamp.

  • Enjoyable twist on the powerful shape shifter trope. I’m now going to look askance at my lamps, suspecting they’re eavesdropping on me. :)

  • Oooh such a creative idea! I love that he’s getting a chance to prove that all shifters aren’t bad, so the redemptive arc is there too. Hopefully the president believes him! Great story!

  • This story had tears in my eyes by the end. Such a strong character- I want to see more of Secret Agent Lampshade!
