By John de Sousa
βIs this gonna hurt?β A wet bead crept down my neck. I wiped it off. Smeared it across my T-shirt.
βNo more than a broken heart.β Magnus gave a boisterous laugh.
I forced a smile. Scary-lookinβ dude. He could do more than hurt me.
The bald behemoth winked, then sat next to me, a mountain of muscle under a tattoo forest of skulls, apparitions, and strumpets. βFirst time, right?β
βTotal virgin.β I drew a shaky breath.
βYou chose the right place, my friend. We aim to please.β Magnus held up the design. βCupid with a bow, on your right arm?β
βYes.β I jiggled a nod. βButβ¦ n-no arrow in his hand.β
Magnus pointed to the paper. βJust like you said, bud. Gotcha covered.β
βOkay.β I swallowed a lump. βAnd on the leftββ
βHeart with an arrow, right?β
I bit my lip. βMmβ¦ Could you put the arrow behind the heart, as if on the ground?β
βLike he missed?β Magnus narrowed one eye.
βNo.β I moistened my lips. βLikeβ¦ it went completely through.β
βThat shouldnβt be too hard. But then the heartββ
βWould have a hole. An empty hole.β
βOkay.β
βWith blood.β I stared at Magnus for a moment, then lowered my gaze to the floor. βLots of blood,β I whispered. More sweat, now from my forehead, dripped into my right eye. How could I be so hot when the cold winter winds were nearly howling outside?
Magnus handed me a paper towel. βWow, bud. Thatβs one seriously broken heart. She must βa really wrecked ya.β
I brought my gaze back to Magnus. βItβs not my heart. Itβsβ¦ hers. The Cupid in the tattoo, thatβs actually me.β
Magnus paused, an alcohol swab in his fingers. βArrow through the heart? Lots of blood?β His eyes searched my face. βLook, bud. I ainβt no priest. Canβt keep no secrets. But if thereβs something you need to talk aboutββ
βOh! No, no.β I held up my palms. βI didnβt um, shoot her.β My thoughts careened at the accusation. That wasnβt supposed to happen. A wrong turn. I scanned the walls. The dark images on display leered their jaded disbelief. βItβs just, umβ¦ a m-metaphor.β
Magnus wrinkled his nose. βA metaphor?β
βLike a word picture, butβ¦ β I squeezed my temples. βI just wanted to pierce her heart with affection. To get below the surface to where she hides her love.β
Magnus narrowed his gaze once more, studying me.
βMy intentions were pure.β I drew a deep breath to steady my pulse. βBut she said I tried too hard. She said I was obsessed. That I was suffocating her. Itβs like I pulled the bow too far, and instead of lodging deepββmy voice crackedββthe arrow went right through.β
The skin-artistβs face grew as dark as his tats. He snapped the swab into pieces.
Did he doubt my story? βYou do believe me, right?β
Magnus rubbed his thumb across his nose like a professional fighter. Fatal Regret was freshly inked across his hand. βExplain. Now.β
I wiped my palms on my jeans. βI went to her house on Valentineβs Day.β I slumped at my own words. βI brought her a diamond ring. Butβ¦ she threw me out. Said she was going back to her old boyfriend.β
βWhatβd you do?β That rumbling voice sent tremors through me.
βI pleaded with her. I told her donβt do this! But she refused to listen.β Adrenaline pushed my heart into a sprint. βShe mocked me. Called me a freak and hurled the ring at me. I was furious. Livid! I wanted her to feel my anguish. Feel my rage!β I fixed my eyes on Magnusβs face. βUlrika was my one true love and she crushed my heart in her hands!β
I started as Magnus shot to his feet and hammered the table with his fist. βUlrika?β he shouted. βUlrika Eklund?β
I felt my eyes go wide as I leaned back away from the giant.
βSo itβs you,β Magnus snarled.
βM-Me? What about me? What are you talkingββ
βYouβre the maggot-faced snot sheβd been sleeping with.β
My heart turned to icy terror as the monster towered over me. Magnus held up his fist. βWhyβd you come here, maggot? To taunt me? To threaten me? You thinkinβ of goinβ to the police?β
βTh-The p-p-police?β My jaw trembled so hard I could barely get out the words. βWhat in the world are you ranting about?β
Magnus hurled the work table across the floor. βHow did you know I shot her with that arrow? How did you know it went right through her heart? You been followinβ me around? Spyinβ on me?β
βWhat? No!β I steadied myself. Glanced at the front door, then back. βYouβ¦ You shot her?β
Magnus leaned in, his face a molten mass of fury. βCut the crap, you lying sack of puke! Thereβs no way you couldβve known all that unless you were there. And donβt give me that metaphor garbage!β
βYou mean sheβs d-d-dead? Sheβs actually dead?β
βDonβt play games with me! Cause youβre about to join her.β Magnus pulled a massive blade from the leather scabbard on his belt. It gleamed from the studio lighting above.
Rivers of sweat poured down my face as I pressed backward into the chair cushion.
Magnus held the blade up to my throat, pushing the tip against my skin. βI may not have my bow and arrows, but trust me, this bad boyβll do the job.β
The front door slammed open with a burst of cold wind. βCity Police!β Three men in plainclothes barreled in, guns drawn. βDrop the knife,β shouted the first. βOn the floor! Now!β
Magnus cursed as he ditched the knife and dropped down.
βAbout time you got here,β I said. βI was about to get a new piercing.β
βWell, detective,β the cop replied, βwith a performance like that, you should get an Oscar.β
