โPlan on harvesting some wheat?โ Jake asked, lifting a brow.
โOr hacking your way through the jungle?โ Trent snorted.
I rolled my eyes. โThisโโI proffered the scytheโโis a souvenir from my latest investigation.โ
โAnother spirit taking issue with his new living conditions?โ Jake paused. โOr, I guess, lack thereof?โ
โDid this one move on, or is he still lingering like Mr. Grumpypants upstairs?โ Trent asked.
โI take offense at that.โ The ethereal form of the late Reginald von Hilderbrand popped head-first through the wall, glaring at Trent. He adjusted his monocle. โDonโt mistake my good breeding for disgruntlement, gentlemen. I am perfectly content to dwell within the confines of this house.โ Then, in a barely quieter tone, he added, โEven when the company Iโm forced to keep is so tiresome.โ
โOh, come on, Hildy, old buddy,โ Trent teased. โYou know Iโm only messing with you.โ
Taking further offence at the misuse of his name, the ghost puffed out his chest and turned up his nose at the youth. He flicked his gaze to me. Noticing the scythe, his eyes widened, and he drifted halfway back through the wall. โI daresay, wherever did you acquire that?โ
Smirking, I lifted my chin. โRecognize it, do you?โ
โIt was the last thing I sawโฆโ The ghost disappeared further until only his eyes and the top of his head remained. โOr perhaps it was the firstโฆโ He vanished.
โUm.โ Jake eyed my new apparatus, lips pursed. โWhy is your souvenir spooking our ghost?โ
โProbably because it once belonged to the Grim Reaper.โ Grinning wickedly, I slashed the air. โOne of them, anyway. Pretty sure more than one hooded figure has the job. Canโt be in multiple places at once, after all.โ
โGrim Reaper?โ Trent eyed me dubiously. โAs in, Death?โ
I shook my head. โOne of Deathโs servants. You didnโt think he released souls himself, did you?โ
โI mean, I figured it was part of his job description,โ Trent muttered.
โNo. Heโs too busy.โ I held up the instrument. โI was investigating a haunting today. While I was searching for the offending ghost, I stumbled across a reaping.โ
A shiver crept down my spine as I remembered the experience. โIt was somewhat disturbing, actually. Iโm used to ghosts, but Iโd never seen one come into being before. One moment, a man was clutching his chestโprobably a heart attack or somethingโand the next, a robed figure was slicing through a silver mist connected to the body.โ
Jaw clenched, I relived the moment the mist had taken a human shape; the spirit had decided to become a ghost rather than dissipate and move on. After so many years of coaxing ghosts to retake their spirit form and release, it was heartbreaking to witness the opposite.
โAre you okay?โ Jake asked.
Pushing the images aside, I nodded. โThe reaper didnโt even explain anything to the newly formed ghost. He just took off, leaving the unfortunate to stare at his remains in utter shock.โ
โWow, thatโs horrible,โ Jake commiserated, and then tilted his head. โWait, if the reaper disappeared after separating spirit from body, how did you get its scythe?โ
Realizing my mistake, I averted my gaze. โHe dropped it, and I picked it up.โ
โThe reaper just dropped his scythe?โ Jake narrowed his eyes. โHis main work toolโthe one thing that gives him power.โ
Heat rushed to my cheeks. โOkay, so maybe I grabbed it and ran.โ
โYou did what!โ Jake and Trent asked simultaneously.
โThat reaper didnโt deserve to wield the scytheโs power.โ I ran a hand through my hair. โYou shouldโve seen that new ghost. He was confused and scared. And the reaper didnโt even care. He was just going to leave.โ
โThatโs terrible, Roland, butโโ
โI bet thatโs why poltergeist activity has been on the rise,โ I cut Trent off. โAll these new ghosts donโt know what to expect, so they grow frustrated and act out. Surely, if someone explained their new circumstances and laid out their options, the number of hauntings would drop.โ
โAnd you, what? Thought youโd take on that responsibility?โ Jake asked.
โWhy not?โ I shrugged. โIโve used my sight to help hundreds of ghostsโbad ghosts. Maybe as a reaper I can stop them from turning evil to begin with.โ
Jakeโs brows shot to his hairline. โAs a reaper?โ
โRoland, youโre human,โ Trent pointed out.
Realizing what Iโd said, I clutched the scythe in both hands. As a reaper. Is that possible?
As soon as the question crossed my mind, the scytheโs handle scorched my palms. A rush of energy seared through me, and I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself against the sudden influx of power.
When I reopened my eyes, both of my friends were watching me, their faces pale and eyes wary. Their fear sparked a burning glee in my chest.
โRoland? Buddy?โ
I smiled upon hearing the tremor in Trentโs voice. He should be afraid. They should all be afraid. I brandished the scythe, admiring the bladeโs sharp edge. Its previous owner had kept it in excellent condition. Iโd have to thank him for thatโright before I released his spirit. Couldnโt have him trying to take the tool back, after all.
โBoogada! Boogada!โ
Startled by Reginaldโs sudden yell, I jerked around and tripped over a fallen broom. Releasing the scythe, I flung out my arms to catch myself.
โKick it away!โ Reginald von Hilderbrand commanded, and Jake lunged forward to acquiesce.
โNo!โ I growled as the energy drained from my body.
โWhatever you do, donโt let him touch that again.โ Reginald disappeared through the wall, but then popped his head back in and added, โBring it to a graveyard. A reaper will retrieve it.โ
Curling into a ball, I shuddered as the last shreds of power left my systemโthen I relaxed.
โRoland?โ
Hearing Jakeโs tentative tone, I flipped over onto my back. โYou know, maybe itโs better I continue helping ghosts as just myself.โ

That had an interesting and unexpected ending. Thank you for the good story.
You’re welcome ๐ Thank you for reading!
good ending!
Thank you ๐
Great story, Rachel! I suppose the Grim Reaper has to get his minions from somewhere…
Thank you! Yep, just don’t steal a scythe and all’s well lol
I like the idea of a less than competent reaper, the shift and reversal of Roland’s attitude is a good closer.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it ๐
Wow! This reminded me of the series Shades of London, which is a great ghost story. The character interactions were great and the power of the scythe was so good! Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you!
I’ll have to check out that series!
Sir Reginald for the win! Haha love the ghost with a monocle!
Thank you ๐
Well written for a ghost story.
Thank you ๐
When I saw your story had a Reginald and mine had a Reginald the very next day, I was thrilled. I enjoyed your Reginald, and I loved your take on the grim reaper’s scythe.
Thank you ๐
Yea I got a kick out of that as well. Reginald is such a fun, under used name
Clever idea and execution (so to speak)!
Lol I’m glad you enjoyed it!
