Save my son.
The plea echoed in Marekās head, as dark and haunting as the forest through which he stumbled. His breathing laboredāas did that of the unconscious child cradled in his arms.
āCome on, David, stay with me,ā he begged.
Something rustled in the bushes ahead. Marek halted and squinted into the darkness. Could it be a pack of wild beskus? A moon cat? Or the Beast that had mauled David and was now coming to finish him off?
A colossal orc stepped out of the shadows, wielding a battle-axe. His golden eyes trailed up and down Marek and stopped at David. āCome with me.ā
Marek staggered back. If only he had a weapon. āGet away!ā
A bone-chilling roar shook the trees and sent a violent tremor through the ground.
The Beast was near.
āI know the way out,ā the orc growled. āHurry!ā
Marek glanced around, then limped after him, not daring to look back until they breached the perimeter of the forest. Rumor was the devilish, roaring Beast could not leave its wooded realm. They were safe from it out here in the open.
Now to contend with their rescuer.
The orc slid his axe into a sheath strapped to his back. āGive me the boy.ā
āOver my dead body,ā Marek snarled.
āThat might happen soon enough. Your injuries are severe.ā
Marek clenched his jaw against the pain throbbing throughout his entire body. āWhat happens to me doesnāt matter.ā
āDonāt be a fool. How are you to care for him dead?ā The orc stared into Marekās eyes. āIf you wish to save this boy, then give him to me.ā
Desperation clawed in Marekās gut. Taking shaky breaths, he studied Davidās pale face. The child wouldnāt last much longer. They were out of allies, and they were out of options.
Marek slowly stepped forward and handed David over to the orc.
He took and held him with a tenderness that seemed odd for a member of the aggressive warrior race.
Marek breathed in the earthy scent of burning wood, then spotted the faint glow of a campfire. After traveling another half mile, they arrived at a small encampment.
Laying David on a fur blanket, the orc rummaged through a leather satchel and withdrew something. āIt is not within my power to heal him completely, but I can stop the bleeding. This is an herbal medicine.ā He applied a yellow powder to the deep lacerations covering most of Davidās small body, then handed some to Marek.
Marek took the medicine and spread it over his own wounds while scrutinizing the orc. A necklace of claws and bones hung around his thick neck. The glowing fire highlighted his enormous muscles. His fur vest, opened in the front, revealed a besku skull tattooed on his broad chest.
Marek lunged at him. āTake your hands off the boy!ā
The orc scowled and pushed him onto the ground.
Marek clambered to his feet. āYouāre a rogue!ā
āWas. Learn the difference. The commander pardoned me when I fought in the war. My allegiance lies with him.ā
Allegiance or not, rogue orcs had always harbored resentment toward humans. Even though the war between their two races ended several months ago, this orcās actions made no sense.
āWhy are you doing this?ā
The orc furrowed his brow, his eyes clouded in sorrow. Perhaps even shame. āMy good deeds are few. The human children I sold or killed are beyond count. By Abirās grace and forgiveness, I can now live with honor like my ancestors and help those in need.ā
Marekās suspicion deepened, only slightly mollified.
The orc gently rested his large hand on Davidās head, closed his eyes, and murmured a series of guttural words.
With clenched fists, Marek stepped toward him. āWhat are you doing?ā
āI am placing him under a spell of protection. Wherever he goes, no one will know his identity.ā
A spell of protection? That meantā
āYouāre a magic wielder?ā Marek whispered in awe.
The orc huffed and shook his head. āSnaps are so ignorant. You believe youāre the only ones capable of wielding such a power.ā
āI didnāt think orcs had magic.ā
āThose of us born with magic abilities are forbidden by our own kind from practicing them, but to deny our gift is to deny the One who gave it to us.ā
āHow long will the spell last?ā
āAs long as Abir wills it.ā The orc lifted his stern gaze. āOr until it is broken.ā
āBy whom?ā
āOne who wears a veil of darkness.ā
Marek fought against a shudder. Darkness now covered the great kingdom from which he and David had escaped. Were the same people who condemned the boy to die destined to find him and finish the job?
Not if Marek had anything to say about it.
āTime is no friend to you. You must leave.ā With great care, the orc picked up David, stood, and handed him to Marek along with the satchel. āThere is food, medicine, and a dagger in there.ā
āThank you.ā Marek grimaced at the caked blood on the childās mangled skin. āWill⦠will he live?ā
āHis spirit is strong, and so is yours, Captain.ā
Marek shot his head up, eyes widening. āHow do you knowāā
āStop asking questions.ā The orc gave him a light shove. āYour enemies will not stop hunting either of you until you leave this land. Now go. May you find honor.ā
Marek nodded, then stumbled off. A weight of guilt settled in his stomach surrounded by a pool of shame. No captain who had failed to save his men or his king and queen from annihilation was worthy of honor. Perhaps defending the lone survivor of the royal family would help him regain what heād lost.
No matter the cost, he would protect Prince David.

I enjoyed this! I really like the orc character and kind of hope they get explored in further tales. Great introduction to a setting within a small space! Thank you for sharing!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the story, Mark! Thanks for reading!
Excellent story. I really want to know more about the characters. Appears as though the Orc is trying to redeem himself from his past sins.
Thanks, Dad! <3
What an exciting read. I hope to get the chance to read more. Thank you!
Thank you, Wyatt!
I’m hooked! There seems to be so much to be uncovered with the characters. I can hardly wait to read more.
So glad it hooked you, Anna! There will be more to come!
Neat twist on the traditional view of the orc. Tolkien might not have agreed, but I like it!
Thanks, Arlan! I personally think orcs deserve their own special place as heroes in fantasy. ;) You’re probably right that Tolkien would disagree, but I’m glad you enjoyed it!
What?! This was so good! I gotta know what happens next š and slowly but surely, orcs are getting to their moment in fantasy!
Yes, Tracy! They are getting their special moment! Thanks so much for reading.
please continue the story!
Laurie, I’m so tickled that you want to know more about what happens. There will most certainly be a continuation of this story. :) I’m in the process of revising book one (which takes place before these events), then will move on to writing book two.
Love how you used such an underutilized fantastical race and put a twist on it. <3 and that twist at the end!! Amazing!
Thanks, Cassie! I think orcs have so much potential as more than just villains in fantasy stories. Glad you enjoyed the twists!
Great story. Would love more stories with these characters!
Thanks for reading! Don’t worry–I’m working on the stories with Marek, David, and our orc protector. ;)
Good story. I enjoyed it.
Thanks, Paul! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent work! *applauds*
Thanks, Rose!
Michala, I really enjoyed your story! My favorite line: āto deny our gift is to deny the One who gave it to us.ā Let us not deny others the gift of words God has given us. Keep writing!
Thank you, Deborah! At the 2024 conference, a few of us gals talked about how writing is obedience to God. Keep up the good work on the wonderful stories you’ve submitted!
