If anything merits some Courage Cordial, itโs a job interview.
I stare at the glass bottle on my shelf, one of many elixirs Iโve created. A sip wonโt hurtโitโll just give me a little confidence boost. And Iโve made hundreds of successful potions before, which is why in thirty minutes Iโll be walking under the big top to interview for the circusโs Enhancing Elixir Expert position.
I inhale and reach for the bottle. Just a sip. Then Iโll be smooth enough to ace this interview. Before I can change my mind, I unscrew the lid and down a swig of the blackberry-flavored liquid.
A shiver runs through my body. I should go skydiving or remove that wasp nest Iโve been avoiding. Maybe even talk to my crush! Job interview? No problem! Why was I so worried?
I grab my purse, smooth my skirt, and head out the door.
When I walk into the circus tent, itโs abuzz with activity and practicing performers. My heart flutters as I imagine them putting on a magically-enhanced show with the help of my elixirs. Fire-breathers are cool, but what if they breathed dragon-worthy flames that swirled and danced around the whole tent?
โHello!โ A man wearing a snazzy red jacket greets me, shaking me out of my daydream. โIโm Val, the ringleader. You must be Charlotte.โ
โYes, sir.โ I shake his hand firmly, and he leads me to a small table.
โSo, Charlotte.โ He glances at my application as we sit down. โWhatโs your favorite part of being an Elixir Expert?โ
โThatโs easy. Itโs fun.โ Honestyโs always best.
Val nods, a shadow of a grin lifting the corner of his lips. โAnd why do you think you deserve this job?โ
โWellโฆโ I tilt my head and shrug. โIโm the best.โ Is that professional to say? Oh, wellโwhatโs wrong with being confident?
Valโs eyebrows rise. โGo on.โ
โIโve studied elixirs since I was a child. I was top of my class in magic schโ”
โBrutus, no!โ
A flash of orange draws my attention across the tent, where a brawny tiger tears at the safety net stretched over the ground. The animalโs massive paws rip the net apart like cotton candy.
Above, a man dangles by one arm from a trapeze. He reaches for the bar with his other hand, but heโs losing strength and will fall any second. And that damaged net wonโt do him any good.
Val stands. โOh no.โ
Panicked staff scramble for a solution while the trapeze artist shouts for help. Sweeping my surroundings, my eyes land on a small trampoline tucked away in a corner. I bolt toward it.
โCharlotte!โ Val shouts.
I donโt turn back. I donโt know if that tigerโs dangerous, but Iโm not afraid.
I grab the trampoline and pull it toward the tiger, who watches me curiously. โHey, Brutus. Donโt mind me.โ
The trampoline is fairly light, but cumbersome. Iโm grateful when Val runs over and picks up the other end. Together we place it under the acrobat, who immediately drops, landing with a graceful flip.
Brutus purrs and rubs against my arm. Grinning, I rub his ears before the wrangler leads him away, scolding him for being a bad boy.
โAmazing!โ
When I look at Val, his face blurs. I blink and stumble back, barely aware of his hand grabbing my arm to steady me. Thatโs rightโthe elixir. They wear off a little faster the first time you use themโit takes a few doses to learn how your body responds to it and practice controlling the pace at which it burns.
As my wooziness fades, the past few minutes flood back to me. Oh my stars, I cuddled a tiger. Andโ
My heart sinks. Did I really say all those stupid things during the interview? I blink back tears. They seemed like good risks at the time, but they were just arrogant and obnoxious.
โAre you all right?โ Val studies my face.
I struggle to look him in the eye. โIโm so sorry, sir. I made the mistake of taking someโโ
โCourage elixir.โ Heโs grinning.
I frown. โYes. How did you know?โ
He tips his top hat and smirks. โIโve been the Elixir Expert here for the past six yearsโI know that sparkle in someoneโs eye when theyโve had a dose. Iโm only filling my position because Iโve taken on so many other responsibilities.โ
I never even had a chance of sneaking my little cheat past him. I swallow and power-walk to retrieve my purse. โWell, Iโm sorry for my unprofessional behavior. Thank you for your time, and I wish you luck finding another Expert.โ
โAre you kidding?โ He runs after me. โMaybe you wouldnโt have said those things otherwise, but you were honest. You revealed that you have fun practicing your skills. And besides thatโฆโ He winks. โI saw your work in action today. Everyone here is used to Brutus, but Iโd bet you never would have gotten near him without a quality elixir. Congratulations, Charlotte Haynes. Youโre hired.โ
Speechless, I shake his outstretched hand. โTh-thank you,โ I stutter. Is this really happening?
Val places a hand on my shoulder. โNow, walk with me. Tell me what youโre going to bring to the show.โ
I fall into step beside him, and my mind spins with possibilities as I tell him about all my creations. โWell, Val, thereโs Strength Serum, Dragonbreath Draught, Balancing Brewโฆโ

This was a laugh-out-loud delight that has my mouth watering for some popcorn!
(also, you’ve piqued my interest in the various flavors of elixirs… if courage is blackberry, then what’s balancing like?)
Aww I’m glad it made you laugh! (And hmm, that’s a good question! Maybe someday we’ll find out…)
I think we could all use a little of that elixir in our life. Fun story.
I think so, too! ๐ Thank you!!
great fun! a virtual 3 ring circus performace. i’m looking forward to more stories.
Thank you so much!
What a lot of fun! Some of those elixirs would be great to have!
Thank you! I know, right? I’d love to have some. xD
This was a DELIGHT. I’m grinning so hard right.
“Hey, Brutus. Donโt mind me.โ She says to the TIGER. Oh man, too, too great. And I adored Val’s whole amused attitude throughout it all.
Such a fun, rollicking story! I loved it!
What can I say, the girl knows how to make an effective Courage Cordial. XD Thank you so much, Christine!
Delightful and humorous story.
Thank you!
This was a fun read. I like how she stumbles all over herself as the elixir fades and she realizes what she had said in the interview along with Val knowing all along.
Thank you! Yup, that former Elixir Expert saw through her the whole time. ;)
As someone who just had a job interview, this story is fantastic. ๐
Haha, thanks! ๐ (and I hope your interview went well!!)
Good job, Emily! The part with the tiger and the trampoline made me laugh too. ๐
I secretly wanted the tiger to end up on the trampoline. I have a feeling that may be in the cards next!
I absolutely love this! These elixirs sound like fun, and goodness knows I could use a confidence elixir.
I think it’s awesome that Val knows and yet lets her keep going.
Fun read!!
I always live a good potion story!
What a fun story! And I love the concept of the elixirs! Could use some of that myself…
Cuddling a tiger? Must’ve been quite the elixir. I love this story so much! Always makes me grin.
