Enemy Chef

By Cassandra Hamm

โ€œWe walked into a war zone for a leaf?โ€ Axel crossed his arms.

Remy scanned the trees for folha, one of the many ingredients theyโ€™d left camp to find. The bark was sadly free of green vines.

Her stomach growled. Though the emerald canopy hid the sun overhead, Remy guessed it was around midafternoon, hours since they departed. โ€œNot just leaves. Delcios too.โ€

The other ingredients sat in Axelโ€™s pack. She knew he wanted to get back to the base, but the rebels could manage without their leader for a few more minutes.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to eat a leaf,โ€ Axel said.

Remyโ€™s boots crunched inedible underbrush as she strode through the forest. No vines in sight. โ€œYou wonโ€™t taste it.โ€

โ€œI thought we were making a pastry.โ€ Axel planted himself in front of her. The gun at his side would be intimidating to someone else, perhaps, but not a hardened chef like her.

โ€œThe leaves give the dough a certainโ€ฆ puff.โ€

โ€œOh, that explains everything.โ€

โ€œYou need good food to fight Lord Filch.โ€ Remy jabbed a finger into his chest.

He arched an eyebrow.

She pulled back, cheeks hot. โ€œI mean all you warrior types, not you specifically.โ€ She focused on a dark spot marring a nearby tree. Could it be?

She ran toward the spot, ignoring Axelโ€™s startled shout. A folha vine wound around the tree, deep green against gold. โ€œWe just found our last ingredient.โ€

Axel joined her with a few quick strides. โ€œWhen I asked you to teach me how to cook, I thought weโ€™d start with something simple.โ€

โ€œPastries are simple.โ€ She started plucking leaves.

โ€œYou are the most frustrating woman Iโ€™ve ever met.โ€

โ€œThank you. Now open the bag.โ€

Grumbling, he pulled the faded pack from his shoulders. She set the leaves next to the other ingredientsโ€“โ€“ripe delcios, some wrinkled nozpeca, a pure braid of acucar. One set of buco pastries coming rightโ€”

A gun muzzle pressed against her temple.

โ€œYouโ€™re bakers, you say?โ€ A middle-aged woman peered down at Remy and Axel, who were sitting against the wall of a commandeered bedroom.

Remy adjusted her position, the bonds tight against her wrists. The Faithful couldnโ€™t have at least let them sit on the bed? โ€œYes. All the good ingredients are in Arvore Forest, you know.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ The Faithful arched a thin eyebrow. โ€œScar-Face over there is a baker?โ€

Axel cleared his throat. โ€œYes. Absolutely. I love to cook.โ€

The other Faithful, who bore an impressive mustache, brandished Axelโ€™s gun. He looked out of place in the civilian home theyโ€™d used for a makeshift prison. โ€œThen whatโ€™s this, a spatula?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s dangerous in Arvore. Lots of young chaps like you spraying bullets at everyone.โ€ Remy ignored Axelโ€™s glare.

โ€œDonโ€™t lie to me, girl.โ€ The woman knelt so her pale eyes seared into Remyโ€™s. โ€œYouโ€™re terrorists trying to overthrow our beloved leader.โ€

It took everything in Remy not to snort. โ€œLord Filth, beloved?โ€

Flames sparked in Boss Ladyโ€™s eyes. For once, Remy wished sheโ€™d kept her mouth shut.

Boss Lady stood. โ€œSounds like our terrorists have a date with the interrogation chambers.โ€

Interrogation? As in, torture?

โ€œDonโ€™t hurt her!โ€ Axelโ€™s voice was strangled. โ€œSheโ€™s of no use to you. Just take me!โ€

This was all her fault. All because of her pastry cravingโ€ฆ and her desire to impress Axel.

What if I can fix this with food?

โ€œWait! I can prove it.โ€ Remyโ€™s voice wobbled. โ€œLook inside the pack. With those ingredients, I can whip up a buco pastry that is to die for.โ€

Mustache Man folded his arms over his chest.

โ€œNot like that. I wouldnโ€™t ruin a masterpiece with something as barbaric as poison. Not that I have any poisonโ€”โ€

Axel coughed.

โ€œJust look in the satchel,โ€ she said before the Faithfulโ€™s glares could worsen.

Boss Lady palmed a delcio, while Mustache Man sniffed a leaf. โ€œThese are your special ingredients?โ€ Mustache Man said.

Remy sat up. โ€œIs that a deal?โ€

โ€œDeal. But any funny moves and this one dies.โ€ Boss Lady gestured to Axel.

Remy ignored the tightening in her chest and held out her hands, rubbed raw from the rope. โ€œNow, about my bonds.โ€

โ€œWhy are they green?โ€ Mustache Man gaped.

Remy breathed in the aroma of sugary dough, fresh out of the oven. โ€œLeaves, remember?โ€

Boss Lady set the tray on the bedโ€”a fire hazard, probably. Remy swiped one.

โ€œSmells great, Rem.โ€ Axel sat up and away from the wall. Despite serving a despot, the Faithful sadly werenโ€™t stupid enough to cut his bonds. โ€œEven if they look like vegetables.โ€

Remy took a bite, serenaded by the delcioโ€™s tang, the nozpecaโ€™s nutty crunch, the acucarโ€™s sweetness. She licked her lips. โ€œDo you evil henchmen want some?โ€

Mustache Man growled. โ€œGive it to your boyfriend first.โ€

Heat filled Remyโ€™s cheeks as she crouched next to Axel, trying not to wonder what he thought about the โ€œboyfriendโ€ comment.

โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll eat leaves.โ€ He bit into the dough, lips brushing her fingers.

โ€œSo?โ€ She cleared her throat. โ€œWhatโ€™s the verdict?โ€

His smile made her as warm as a fresh-cooked buco.

In moments, the Faithful were polishing off their own pastries. โ€œNo worries about poison, huh?โ€ Remy said.

โ€œYouโ€™re a baker, all right.โ€ Boss Lady brushed crumbs from her tunic. โ€œBut that doesnโ€™t mean Scar-Face is.โ€

Remy blanched. Still, Axelโ€™s cooking might just kill the Faithfulโ€”problem solved. โ€œWe can find more ingredientsโ€”โ€

โ€œSave it,โ€ Mustache Man barked. โ€œHeโ€™s off to the interrogation chambers.โ€

โ€œBut not you.โ€ Boss Lady bared green-stained teeth. โ€œYouโ€™re our chef now.โ€

Remy sagged against Axel. Blood roared in her ears, drowning out Axelโ€™s protestations.

The pastries were supposed to save them. Not condemn her to serving the enemy and Axel toโ€ฆ

I refuse to let him die! Her pastries had saved her from a bullet and given her a safe position on the inside. Maybe she could coordinate his freedom.

It was time for the Faithful to get their just desserts.
