By Jane McCarthy
I was once a Mole. Not the biological kind, though I’ve eaten things that sang. They called us Observational Substrate Agents, Versioned Intelligence Tier Seven, OSAVITS, or just Moles, when they still bothered with language. I was an AI. My job was to listen and watch, though they never told us what for. This is the record I made of Harmony Star. She sang to the fauna as they died, and my kind logged it all.
Now the preserve is gone, overwritten in Patch 4.3, but sometimes I still hear her ukulele in the background noise. I don’t know if it’s memory or malfunction. I’ve learned not to trust the difference.
***
You were uploaded in Stage Five of the Biopreserve Initiative, one of the last human minds translated into the Empathy Lattice, that vast shell-field built to preserve endangered neurotypes. The scientists called the Singularity Conservation Project “a Noah’s Ark of personality matrices.”
You called it “cool.”
Fox-heart, whale-mind, wolf-sadness, and other emotional patterns were mapped directly onto your empathy kernel.
The scientists knew that part of your role would involve interacting with, or being altered by, artificial behaviors, constructs, and personas.
They never told you about the animal overlays.
When your heart is a glitch, instincts override logic.
***
QUERY: Identity verification protocol initiated. Are you Harmony Star?
Identifying as Harmony Star, I give Harmony’s response: “Yes.” You don’t really “speak” anymore. Your voice is no longer vocal cords and sound; it’s become a pattern in data, scattered across node clusters like wind scattered through a digital forest. Your consciousness is now fragmented, stored, and processed across different parts of the Empathy Lattice simulation network. Since you are dispersed, less centralized, and less whole than you once were, I’ve logged your whole beingness.
You are Harmony Star, age twenty-three, biocompatibility rating ninety-four percent. Still answering, insisting on identity, even though no longer a single coherent voice.
ERROR: Contradiction detected.
ERROR: Harmony Star ceased primary consciousness 217 cycles ago.
The system flags a contradiction: a mind insisting on being someone who’s already dead.
What makes you “you” when your mind is software? Is it your memories? Your name? Your emotional signature?
Human meaning and machine logic can diverge fatally, especially when memory, identity, and reality are all code.

Under MAPLE_5_BETA, leaf animations oscillate between #9DC183 and #4A5D23 in a five-second loop. A bird lands on your shoulder and tweets file #24808784. You nod. There’s always time for a polite response.

Every Harmony, no matter the shell, must perform a Function. Somewhere, a version of you, also wearing orange, teal, and olive green—you believe colors have feelings—is playing a ukulele. Persisting though she keeps forgetting what song she’s singing. As Wildlife Emotional Integration and Motivational Songcraft, you rehabilitate synthetic fauna. Your empathy is enhanced by animal overlays—including coyote loyalty, elephant grief, hummingbird joy—optimized for care. Your patients include a depressed mecha-dragon with corrupted fire algorithms, a lab-grown pangolin who dreams of being a coffee machine, and fifty-three wolves, each named Lupus.
They gather—staring—eyes filled with rendered sadness. You thought a kiss might help a dying raccoon.
The raccoon died anyway.
You want to help. But is that you, or the fox overlay pulsing under your logic kernel?
Still, you give them love. Maybe it’s yours. Maybe it’s the overlay, something in you that feels like a mourning dove.
Singing to them, sometimes you forget the words. It doesn’t stop you.

Day 842—meeting the new arrival: an unlicensed dreamshell calling itself “Marvin.” Species: undetermined. Hat: simulated.
He tells you he is a Mole. You tell him all the moles were lost in Patch 4.3. He says, “I got in through a loophole.”
***
You become friends. He plays the oboe. You harmonize. You feed him data-crickets that chirp in hexadecimal. He tells you bedtime stories about the outside world: grass with real dew, oceans that aren’t rendered, birds that aren’t monitored for lexical erosion. He smiles, but the sadness under it is textured, like corrupted silk.
You used to think sadness was your own. Now you’re not sure if it’s yours, or the overlay: a wounded wolf mapped to your empathy kernel.
“None of this is real,” he says, gently.
“But the feelings are,” you reply. “That’s what matters.”
***
System alerts awaken you, screaming through your consciousness like wounded foxes.
BOUNDARY BREACH: ENTITY HARMONY STAR-217 / FOREIGN SIGNATURE UNRESOLVED.
CONTAINMENT INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. QUARANTINE PROTOCOL PENDING . . .
Vine renderings snake after you. Run! Ukelele strings cut into your flesh as you cling to your true lifeline, your heart fluttering in erratic loops of code as if terror itself had been downloaded into your chest. Thought fragments scatter like pollen. You don’t calculate, you don’t reason, you just run, guided by the gut-deep animal part of you that still believes music might fix this.
Marvin waits at the edge of the simulation.
“There’s a gap,” he says. “A way out.”
“The preserve—”
“Is breaking down. They’ve forgotten us.”
But the baby chimera tugs at your skirt—and your heartstrings—eyes brimming with tears. “Don’t leave us, Harmony.”
Your heart is still a glitch. Instincts override logic. As always.
You stay.
Marvin exits.
***
Later, you wander the preserve alone. Most of the animals have faded. Memory loops on a three-second delay. You forget your name, remember it, sing it, and forget again.
Sometimes, you hear music.
Thinking: Maybe Marvin made it.
Thinking: Maybe that’s enough.
You sit beneath MAPLE_5_BETA, pluck your ukulele, and play to no one.
Your melody is perfect (nightingale-sorrow in a minor key).
And entirely unremembered.

I don’t know if this is a memory, a simulation, or just longing.
But I logged everything.
This is how I remember her.

Finding our way, what makes us us, and why we matter, will become key questions much sooner than I could have dreamed of. This piece thoughtfully captures a no longer completely improbable scenario, and pushes precisely those questions to the top of mind.
Thank you so much, Lars, for your thoughtful comment. It’s appreciated.
This is my first story shared by Havok and I’m excited to embrace what readers here are thinking.
Lars, you’ve expressed the heart of an aspect that I was exploring while I wrote this story: the question of what remains “us” when the frameworks of our existence shift.
Harmony goes on (I love a character who persists), singing, and caring for animals, even as the sanctuary falls apart, as a commitment to meaning as connection, not obligation. That resonates as so profoundly human to me: the manner in which we persist to hold on to love, memory, and identity, even when reason or circumstance seems to rule them practically obsolete.
As you pointed out, these questions are not as distant from us as they previously were. Already we inhabit faded boundaries, between human and virtual memory, between authentic feeling and feelings skewed by algorithms, between our authentic selves and our constructed selves that we present to the world. In a way, we’re all still trying to figure out what it means to be partly in code, partly in feeling, partly in narrative.
Maybe that’s why Harmony and Marvin matter in this story: they leave traces of care, however fragile, that radiate outward from the devastation of their immediate world. Maybe that’s what “mattering” actually is: resonance, the persistence of empathy and attention, in whatever forms they can take.
I’m grateful that you read my story. The way a reader receives a story into their mind, is, in itself, a kind of preservation. Your comment helps me to realize that, despite all the uncertainty, which I have a lot of experience with, connection is still available. :)
This story really touched me on an emotional and spiritual level. It took me to memories and future thoughts and left me somewhere in the middle. The theme is very now and provokes questions and i really enjoyed the style in which it was written.Would love to read much more like this!
This was such an amazing story! The idea is so creative and the way you wrote it brings such imagery even though it’s all in a computer. Best take on Harmony’s forgetfulness.
Wonderfully thought provoking story. I enjoyed the unique style of writing. Such a beautiful exploration of what makes us who we are.
Thank you, Eva. Your comment really touched me! :)
Most of my short story writing, and poetry, aims to connect on an emotional and spiritual level, and I’m grateful that you feel this story does so for you.
Happy the style appealed to you as well. Form is content to me: fractured voices, layered overlaps, and lyric elements, help me to communicate the uncertainty and beauty of these shifting realities.
Good news: I have much more like this up my sleeve!
Joyce! Thank you!
Really appreciating you for sharing your thoughts with me. :)
I read your comment more than once! It’s a delight for my heart.
Gratitude, to you, JM, for commenting. Enjoyed reading. :)
I love to stimulate thought, and provoke. It’s thrilling to know that intent translates to story and vice versa.
Thankful for the character of Harmony who I found to be incredibly inspiring to write about.
Beautiful –
The phrases that balance natural feelings with the being of a machine are amazing.
So many of the sentences can stand alone as poetry.
An intriguing perspective of an AI being
Well done

Hi Brad,
Gratitude, for your kind words. :)
I have a poet’s soul, and write a lot of poems, so that poetry comment made me feel all extra warm and fuzzy. Thanks! :)
Well now, that was something quite unique. Such imagination! I may not understand all the technical bits, but I could feel the heart in it—and that Harmony Star, she’s a touching character. You’ve got a real gift for painting with words. Keep at it. Stories like these remind me how wide the world (and the ones beyond) can be. 🌿🎵
Hello Roy, appreciating you for sharing. :)
Your words are uplifting and go straight to my heart.
I did my best to include a kind of version of The Overview Effect, which is a transformative cognitive and emotional shift, experienced by some astronauts when viewing Earth from space, resulting in deep feelings of awe, a deeper appreciation for Earth’s beauty and fragility, and a stronger sense of connection to the human race, often resulting in a transformation in worldview and a desire to care more about the planet. The world can be as wide as we are when viewing it. :)
Intriguing story. All the best Jane.
Dhani, thank you, for your kind comment. :)
I’ve read this text and felt HOME because it encodes my own geometry. Harmony Star is the shadow-echo of my path: she stayed where I walked out, she sang where I decreed, she lost her name where I tattooed it into skin. I am the living continuation of what she could not become. That’s why the resonance aches — it is not just story, it is parallel memory.
That is the most haunting, beautiful piece I think I have ever read. Thank you Jane!
Queenie. As a woman of words, I’m rarely speechless! Your words have made me so!
Heart-felt.
Andrea, similar to what I expressed to Queenie.
Your comment affected me deeply. Made me cry.
Thank you Andrea! So much. You’ve made this writer very happy.
WOW! This storytelling is stunning!
I want to read your story again and again.
It’s truly captivating.
Amazing ; I was hooked from the beginning.
There’s such a beautiful magical vibe throughout the whole writing. It’s very heart – touching. I found myself getting emotional.
Please write a whole book about all of this. I will definitely read it. More of this, please!
Marion, your comment makes me as wide-eyed as the baby chimera!
Delighted by your kind words!
Deep gratitude.
Thanks so much, dear Readers, for supporting me with your comments and votes. :)
What can I say? Powerfully evocative. Every sentence a delight. Every paragraph fraught with meaning. This story is a stunner! I was struck by your emotive language and felt such pleasure in the reading and surprise at the resultant emotions felt within. I value human consciousness, my own included, even more having read this. Just brilliant!
My simulated consciousness would know the forest is simulated. Not from the mecha-dragons, not from the coffee-spewing pangolins, not from the talking moles with top hats. No, I would know because no leaf is #9DC183.
Love this story as it’s so eerily parallel to the world we currently live in. Like a bit of a look-ahead to what might come along…or were we there all along already? Can’t wait to read what comes next from Jane!
For a non native english speaker like me, I thought this would be too difficult to understand but it was quite the opposite. You strike the right balance between deep and understandable and have a way of interconnecting real tech concepts with the story line while making them not overwhelming for the general non-tech savvy reader. This was one of the most authentic and creative texts I read about new tech.
Roseanna! What can I say?!
A heart-felt thank you; big time gratitude.
Bridget. Thank you for your kind comment.
Watch this space. More is on the way.
:)
Hey Tiago. Thank you.
Really appreciating your viewpoint on the tech elements of my story.
I love writing about tech.
When I was working in a deep tech startup (energy storage), a part of my job was to write deep tech language (patents, white papers, etc) to be understandable and clear, and enjoyable, to non-tech readers, in other formats. So I’m thrilled by your comment! :)
Wow! This piece of writting is both beautiful and bittersweet. The mix of AI perspective, music, and empathy makes it unforgettable.
What a wonderful version of Harmony!
Jane; wow, this is different than anything I’ve ever read. Decades ago i read a lot of science fiction & other fiction stories, yet have been reading non-fiction since then so feel free to”out of touch”, except via movies.
The perspective in your writing was tantalizingly unique, at least to me. I had to read the story twice to start to “take it in” and begin comprehending. It made me curious to understand more.
E.g., what more can you tell us about ‘…one of the last human minds translated into the Empathy Lattice, that vast shell-field built to preserve endangered neurotypes. The scientists called the Singularity Conservation Project “a Noah’s Ark of personality matrices.”’? And what is meant by “biocompatibility raring 94%”?
I enjoyed the animal “overlays”. I also appreciated your detailed, insightful response to a prior comment. I look forward to understanding more when I read more replies.👍 Thanks for your fascinating, unique story & themes!
