Since the last thing I needed was to draw negative attention to myself while visiting my girlfriendâs family, of course my brother had to knock over a decorative vase.
I stared down at the ceramic shards and uttered a Motervian curse.
Jorgaa knelt and dipped a blue finger into the scattered powder. Though heâd agreed to don a human form during his visit, heâd declared Earth skin tones too drab for his liking and had stuck with our Motervian azure. âWhat do you think this powder is?â
I shook my head. âThis will doubtlessly be one more thing Sofia holds against me. With my luck, that pot will be some Grecian family heirloom.â
âWorse than that. Either Sofiaâs grandmother had a jar of drugs, orâŚâ Jorgaa plucked a golden square from the rubble and turned it for me to see. âOr you spilled grandpa.â
Reading the engraving, I spat a string of curses.
Jorgaa bit his lip. âUnfortunate. Think we can blame the accident on that fat furry creature?â
My gaze landed on a graying dog resting in the corner. âLook at him. Heâs too old to do anything but sleep. No one will believe it.â
Jorgaa shrugged, rising back to his full height. âDo you think Sofiaâs family will let us eat before they kick us out? Because Iâm hungry, and you really talked up this whole Greek Independence Day feast. By the way, whether or not this food is good, Iâm not visiting in March again. Itâs too cold.â
I glowered at my brother.
âHey, Iâve been researching Greece ever since you told me about Sofia. I want to try a gyro.â
Lowering my chin, I deepened my glower.
Jorgaa sighed. âLook, maybe this is a blessing. Ever since I arrived, youâve complained about how much Sofia nags you. If sheâs driving you mad, maybe itâs better she dumps you now.â
âDumps me?â I blinked. âYou think sheâll dump me over this?â
âYou spilled a beloved family member on the floor. SoâŚâ
âYouâre the one who bumped the urn!â
âWell, you startled me,â Jorgaa retorted, but I wasnât really listening.
âDo you think we can hide them somewhere?â I asked.
âThe ashes?â
I opened a piano bench, but it was filled with books. âYes, the ashes! What else?â My spirits lifted when I noticed a decorative carpet. âMaybe we can clean up the bits of pottery and brush the rest under here.â
âYou want to sweep human remains under the rug?â Jorgaa clicked his tongue. âYou think that will fix the situation?â
âWe have to do something!â
âWhy?â
âWhat do you mean why?â I growled, poking the moss in a fake plant.
âWhatâs the point of staying with someone who irritates you?â Jorgaa asked. âWhy not find someone else? Perhaps a Motervian so I donât have to travel six light-years to visit. Youâve only been with Sofia for what? Six months?â
âTwo years.â
Jorgaa tilted his head. âOkay, thatâsââ
âFireplace!â I exclaimed.
âYou canât smell the gas?â
âRight.â I ran a hand through my hair, finally giving up on hiding the ashes.
âLook, from what Iâve gathered, youâve been miserable recently.â Jorgaa crossed his arms. âPlease explain why youâre so adamant against being dumped.â
I flung out my hands. âBecause I love her. No matter what she does, or how much she infuriates me, I love her. And I always will.â Sighing, I slipped a box from my pocket. âI could never find the right time. I thought maybe this weekendâŚâ
Jorgaa eyed the ring. âYou never mentionedââ
âI didnât want to jinx it.â I closed the box. My shoulders slumped.
Jorgaa pursed his lips. âWell, we canât hide the ashesâthatâd be wrong. But donât worry. Weâll tell everyone itâs my fault. Sofiaâs family doesnât need to like me. Weâllââ
âThere you two are. Dinner is ready, and my grandmotherâŚâ
Flinching, I turned to find Sofia standing in the doorway. She had twisted most of her hair into a knot so only a couple strands hung loosely around her face. I wished sheâd kept it down. It wouldâve blocked the frozen mortification written across her features as she stared at the broken urn. Sofia pressed her lips together and lifted her gaze to meet mine. I did my best not to cringe under her glare.
âSo,â Jorgaa began, but Sofia whirled around and left. He coughed. âWell. That stare was⌠intense. You sure you want to marry her?â
âWith every fiber of my being.â
Jorgaa nodded. âThen, in the future, I donât want to hear any more complaining.â
âIf there is a future,â I muttered.
âDonât worry. No one can stare at you with that muchââJorgaa blew out his cheeksââwhatever that was and not marry you.â
âYou think so?â
âPositive.â Jorgaa scratched his neck. âSo, after Iâve received my fill of disapproval, Iâll go back to your apartment. Just sneak me out a gyro. I really want to try one.â
âWeâre not having gyros.â Sofia strode back in carrying a lean, gray cat. She set it down next to the broken urn. âWeâre having spanakopita, dolmades, hummus, olives, pita bread, and salad and cheese.â
âDomades and spanka-what?â Jorgaa asked as we watched the cat.
It laid down in the ashes and batted lazily at a piece of ceramic.
âStuffed grape leaves and spinach pies,â Sofia replied. âAnd if you want a chance to eat them, you wonât mention to anyoneâespecially my great-aunt Mariaâthat you broke my great-uncle Vinnieâs urn. Understood?â
She waited for us to nod, then scooped up the cat and left the room. A moment later, Sofiaâs voice reverberated down the hallway, âMamĂĄ! Giovani knocked over an urn again!â
âAgain?â Jorgaa narrowed his eyes. âHas this beast been framed before?â
âBetter it than us,â I muttered. âLetâs go.â
Jorgaa grabbed my shoulder. âDonât look so stressed. Your girlfriend just framed a cat for you. If thatâs not love, what is?â
