The end of the world was an inconvenient time to have eighty-foot-long hair.
Rapunzel bolted through the forest, trying to ignore the echoing moans that chased her. Her head snapped back when an unruly strand of hair tangled around a branch. She yanked it free, then pumped her legs as hard as she could. But the monsters drew nearer by the second.
I really should have remembered a hair tie.
Her feet slid out from under her and she landed hard in a puddle of sludge. Wiping the silver liquid on her jeans, she tried not to imagine how much of the stuff got in her hair.
Breaking through the tree line, Rapunzel drew from a new reserve of energy, redoubling her efforts. About a kilometer from the forest, the fortified door of the hideout came into view.
Pete opened the door for her. The zombie chases of the last few years had become so commonplace that no one was a bit concerned. Rapunzel heard the creature banging on the reinforced steel door after Pete locked it.
Bell, Peteâs best friend, was by Rapunzelâs side in a split second. âDid you find anything, Raps?â she asked eagerly.
Still panting too much to speak, Rapunzel nodded and reached into her satchel, pulling out a few packets of powdered food, some soup cans, and ten water bottles.
âMake it last, mates. We need to be extra sparing if we hope to last the trip up north,â Pete reminded them. Of course he would be the one giving instructions, being the oldest of the group.
âCan you pass me a can of chicken noodle?â Midas asked.
âYes, I can,â Pete answered, politely handing a water bottle to Bell.
Midas sighed. âFine. Would you please pass me a can of chicken noodle soup?â He imitated Peteâs British accentâquite unsuccessfully.
âRaps, I think you need a shower,â Bell suggested quietly. âYour hair is covered in some silver⌠something.â
âOh, Iâve gotten used to unexpected hair color changes,â Rapunzel retorted, narrowing her eyes. She used to have dark brown locks, before an unfortunate prank from Midas.
âAre you seriously still bitter?â he asked, taking a break from slurping his cold soup to notice her glare.
âLike burnt coffee with too many grounds,â she said.
âOkay!â Bell broke in. âDo you want to practice together in the basement, Raps?â
âIâll go with you, just in case,â Pete said, running a hand through his gray-streaked blond hair.
Everyone in the little family knew he hated the basement, but it was the only place roomy enoughâand dark enoughâfor Bell to practice her light bending.
âAnd Midas,â he said, âyou might want to save some of that for later, lad. I donât plan on giving you mine when you get hungry tomorrow.â
Midas stared into Peteâs eyes, defiantly scraping the bottom of his soup can.
Stepping into the musty basement reminded Rapunzel of when she had found it two years ago. After escaping from the Laboratory for Disease Study and Prevention, she had been on the run for months when sheâd stumbled on the abandoned bunker.
Sheâd settled into the basement, discovering Midas only when sheâd ventured upstairs a few weeks later. He, too, was hiding from the twisted company. In a couple days, Pete and Bell had shown up, also on the lam from the L.D.S.P. Since then, there had been some close calls in which they were nearly discoveredâby both the L.D.S.P. and zombies.
All the escapees had cool abilities from the experiments they had been subjected to. Pete could fly. Bell was able to manipulate light. Midas turned everything he touched into gold. But all Rapunzel got out of her time at the laboratory was really long hair.
Presumably, their powers provided them with immunity against the disease, unless they were just very good at avoiding zombies. Getting caught would kill the hope of sharing that immunity with the rest of the world.
After a quick look around, Pete stretched out and appeared to fall asleepâon the ceiling.
Suddenly, a clang sounded from the far side of the room, followed by ominous moaning. Zombies. Pete was on the floor in an instant, grabbing Bell and Rapunzel by the shoulders and propelling them back up the stairs.
âNot again,â Pete grunted.
The diseased creature had already made it halfway across the basement floor, his speed increased by his sickness. Rapunzel sprinted to the ground floor while Pete flew Bell up the stairwell. Without warning, Rapunzel felt a sharp tug on her head, and she slammed back down to the floor.
A dull thud stopped her scream. The zombie was on the floor, unconscious. Rapunzel looked around for who or what had knocked the enemy down.
âWhat happened?â she asked.
âYour hair,â Pete said. âIt was⌠alive.â
âIt hit the guy on the head⌠with a crowbar,â Bell whispered.
Rapunzelâs eyes widened as she looked at her hair piled around the bottom of the staircase. It glowed faintly golden in the dark basement, flecked with shimmering silver. Rapunzel watched in amazement as it arranged itself in a neat little heap next to her.
âHow?â she breathed.
âCould the experiments have a delayed effect?â Bell suggested.
âDo you see the silver? I think that sludge mightâve had something in it,â Pete said.
âLook out!â Bell screamed.
Another zombie emerged from the shadows with a shriek and launched at Rapunzel. In a flash, her hair covered her and wrapped itself around the creature, then threw the diseased man across the room as the strands carried Rapunzel up the staircase. Pete slammed the basement door shut, barred it, and padlocked it.
Midas stared wide-eyed at the three of them. âWhat just happened?â

What a fantastic concept! I love that Midas is the only reason Rapunzel’s hair is golden. Genius!
Thanks! Also, even though it’s not official, thanks for the cover!
Great short storyâŚ.. I wish it didnât have to end! âĽď¸
Bravo Caroline!
Thank you! â¤ď¸ Hopefully I can continue it sometime!
I love it! Can’t wait for the sequel! Do they ever get out of the basement and share their immunity with the rest of the world?
You’ll have to wait and see! Maybe I’ll make a sequel sometime đ
Woohoo Caroline! Great job!
Thanks Chloe!!!
This is super fun! I’d love to read more with these characters, maybe get more of their background. I *am* curious whether the stories they’re named for exist in the world â did the scientists name these four based on their powers? Did the characters name themselves because of their abilities? Or do the original stories not exist in this world, so this Rapunzel is the first Rapunzel, etc?
Interesting question! I like the idea that the scientists named them after their powers, but I also want to leave that detail up to the readers! Thank you for reading!
I was so captivated!! I just wanted to keep reading but it ended. Awesome job baby girl!!
Thanks Neenee âşď¸ so glad you liked it!
Such a fun story!! There has to be more!! You’ve got it all–zombies, Stan Lee-type mutant superheroes, fairy tale mentions, and Stranger Things laboratories. That’s a lot to pack into one story!
Thank you! Dystopian has always been one of my favorite genres, and and it can’t be dystopian without zombies đ
Caroline, that was awesome! Your opening line was absolutely classic. I would HAVE to read any story that started like that! And I loved Rapunzel’s retort to Midas, “Like burnt coffee with too many grounds.” Brilliant! LOL! Looking forward to more great stories from you!
The funny thing is, that wasn’t originally the first line! It was about a paragraph in, but the amazing editor at Havok advised me to make it the opening line. Thank you for reading this!
great fun!
Thank you! It was just as much fun to write it!!
A fun piece! ;)
Thanks! đ
Whoa! I enjoyed this! What a great twist on some well-known characters =D
Thank you so much!
Caroline you are a creative and compelling writer! Your story and arrangement drew me completely in on the first line. Very well done. Canât wait to read more!
Thank you so much! It’s really encouraging to hear that â¤ď¸
Whoa! Great story Caroline! Let us know if a sequel comes out :)
Will do, Charlie! Thanks for reading!
Fun story!
Thank you! Although the story is very short, I came to love the characters while writing/editing đ
Haha! This was fun. Love that her hair comes to life
Yeah, I had to try to figure out how to do it in a non-weird way lol! Glad you liked it!
Long hair would be quite the pain in a zombie apocalypse! XD
It would be indeed!! đ
