Aislinn never thought sheโd see Travis inside her greenhouse again.
Clutching her amethyst necklace, she addressed the prison guard accompanying Travis. โIs there something I can help you with?โ
โThe prisoner asked to see you before the trial, Dr. Groves,โ the guard said.
Sweat beaded against the back of Aislinnโs neck, an unfortunate side effect from the glass greenhouseโs stifling heat. She gestured to the ten remaining amethytesโplants that grew precious gemstonesโstretching eagerly toward the ceiling. โI hope you took away his cigarettes. We donโt want another fire.โ
Travisโs expression pinched. One lock of his red hair stuck up, like a devilโs horn. โI just wanted to talk to you before the trial tomorrow, Aislinn.โ
What would a few words hurt? Though Dr. Bryant wouldnโt approve, Aislinn waved him forward. The guard followed.
โJust the two of us,โ she said. โThere are cameras.โ New onesโthe fire destroyed the old equipment.
The guard folded his arms. โHe canโt leave my sight.โ
โWeโll just be right over there.โ She gestured to a blooming amethyte.
The guard hesitated, then nodded.
Aislinn led the handcuffed Travis farther into the greenhouse. They passed newly planted amethytes and stopped next to one thatโd blossomed this morning. Rough, uncut amethysts nestled in its creamy petals.
Her lifeโs work, nearly destroyed by a single cigarette. If not for the seeds Travis had stowed in his pocket, everything sheโd worked for would be ash.
โTheyโre growing back nicely.โ Travis turned his gaze from the plants to her matching amethyst necklace and earringsโthe marks of a supervisor. โI see youโre doing well in my absence.โ
Heโd never been handsome, but her eyes lingered on the smattering of freckles on his once-broken nose, the crease in his bottom lip.
This was exactly why they couldnโt work together.
โYouโll really testify against me?โ
Aislinn ran her fingers over the amethyteโs coarse leaves. โWhat do you want me to say, Travis? Youโre the one who decided to smoke in a greenhouse.โ
โI know. Not my smartest move.โ
Theyโd stayed late, just the two of them, calculating and analyzing. The air, ripe with amethyte blossoms, was sweet and fresh. Darkness had wrapped over them like a cloak.
Those cameras hadnโt reached every part of the greenhouse.
โHereโs the thing. I donโt recall dropping the cigarette. I gave it to you, andโฆโ His cheeks darkened.
She remembered the thrill of her lips touching something his had touched. Smoke stinging the back of her throat, sheโd gazed at the glowing buttโโa tiny ember, capable of such great destruction.
Then sheโd broken every company rule and kissed him.
โI think you were a little distracted,โ she said.
His eyes moved to her mouth. โRight.โ
She turned away. โIโm sorry I have to testify, Travis. I really am. But youโll only get a year.โ
โOnly? Linn, this is jail weโre talking about, not an unpaid internship.โ
โI know!โ She pressed her fingers to her temples, trying to dislodge the mental image of Travis behind bars.
โPlease donโtโฆโ He reached for her.
She pulled back, wishing she could forget the way his hands had cupped her cheeks, the taste of cigarette smoke on her tongue. โThe camerasโโ
โI donโt work for Gemites anymore. They canโt do anything to us.โ
โDr. Bryant doesnโt care about technicalities. You know how she isโโonce lab partners, always lab partners.โ Besides, she never liked me as much as she liked you.โ
โThatโs not true,โ Travis said.
โYeah?โ Aislinnโs lips pinched into a thin line. โThen why did she explicitly praise you when the amethytes started germinating? As if I were just a lab assistant, not one of the minds behind their development. And when you overslept, she patted your hand, but when I had a family emergency, she threatened to let me go.โ
His brow furrowed, like she was a formula he was trying to figure out.
Aislinnโs chest tightened. I shouldnโt have said all that.
โYou asked me to pick the amethyte seeds.โ
โItโs a good thing I did,โ she said. โOr weโd have to start from scratch.โ
โYouโd have to start from scratch.โ He paused. โAislinn, why did you ask me to pick those seeds?โ
โI thought we could take them inside and analyze them after our walk.โ
โNot so the police would find them on me after the fire?โ
Aislinn froze.
โThe kiss was a distraction.โ Travis backed away. โSo I would forget that you never gave the cigarette back. You set me up.โ
Her mouth opened. Closed.
โIs it because you thought Dr. Bryant liked me better?โ
โShe was going to find out about us, Travis. And when she did, you know who wouldโve been the one to go.โ
He gaped.
โDonโt look at me like that.โ She bristled. โAs if you wouldnโt cut me down if it meant keeping your job.โ
โI would not.โ
She arched an eyebrow. โYou wouldโve given up ever growing another amethyte?โ
โOf course not.โ He frowned. โI donโt know. But I wouldnโt have set them on fire.โ
She flinched, remembering the amethysts glowing among the ashes. Only something that drastic couldโve persuaded Dr. Bryant to get rid of Travis.
โThankfully, someone saved enough seeds to rebuild.โ She gestured to the flourishing seedlings. โIn a few months, itโll be like the fire never happened.โ
โIโll tell them tomorrow what you did.โ
She adjusted her gems. โThe feeds show you lighting a cigarette in a greenhouse. Who do you think theyโll believe?โ
His face paled. โYouโre despicable, Aislinn.โ
She shrugged. โScience is about progress, isnโt it? I cut the undesirable variable out of the equation.โ She cleared her throat. โExcuse me, guard? I think Mr. Vossen has said enough.โ
The guard hurried toward her. โIs he hurting you, Dr. Groves?โ
โOh, no,โ she said. โHe canโt touch me.โ
Travisโs expression was as hollow as her soul.
She plucked a gem from the ripe amethyte and smiled. โIโll see you at the trial.โ

SHE’S SO EVIL!!
(Also, I couldn’t get the image of Poison Ivy from Batman the Animated Series out of my mind…)
