âAre you sure there’s nothing else you need, princess?â The maid hovered over Katriel.
Katriel snuggled deeper under her quilts, leaving only her head visible. âNo, Iâm fine.â Now shoo.
âAs you say, princess.â
When the overbearing maid finally closed the door behind her, Katriel tossed off the blankets and snatched a pair of boots from under her bed. She pulled out her sword and a coil of rope, as well. She couldnât believe anyone actually thought she wanted to go to bed before sunset. How sensitive did the court think she was?
After tugging on her boots, Katriel tied one end of the rope to the leg of her bed, then tossed the rest out the window. It came a few inches short of touching the grass. Perfect.
As she climbed onto the windowâs ledge, she glanced across the darkened hills to the faint, red light of battle several leagues away. More men died every day and still the Gartiers marched farther across Allowen.
Elihu, donât let me die by falling. Gritting her teeth, she swung over the windowsill, and crept down the turret with her feet braced against the wall.
It only took a few minutes to reach the second of the castleâs three floors. She would be on the ground and off to the village square before anyone knew she was gone.
âSo how many times does this make?â
Katriel stifled a yelp and slipped, scrambling to keep her footing. Below her, leaning against the wall, was the bane of her existenceâMisael, her bodyguard. Blast.
âI donât see how thatâs important,â she replied.
He leaned his head back, staring up at her with a bored expression. âYou are not eligible.â
âYou just have to be sixteenââ
âAnd a boy.â
Katriel clenched her jaw to hold in a scream of frustration. Her arms began to tremble as she struggled to hold her position. âCan we finish this conversation on the ground?â
Misael shook his head.
âIâm going to fall. Iâll break my neck.â
âThen at least you wonât run away anymore.â
She rolled her eyes. âFine. Catch.â She let go of the rope.
He scrambled into position just in time. They crashed to the ground, Katrielâs landing cushioned by her bodyguard’s body. Misael moaned from where her elbow collided with his stomach.
Katriel shoved off the ground and headed for the gate. She didnât make it three steps before her foot jerked short, and she faceplanted into the grass. Misael dragged her back by her ankle. Clamping a hand on her forearm, he shakily regained his feet as he rolled his eyes toward the stars. âBlessed Elihu, knock some sense into her.â
âDonât use Elihuâs name like that.â
âI wasnât using his name, I was praying.â
Katriel managed to stand on her own with only her knee throbbing.
Hand still tight on her arm, Misael pulled her toward the rope. âBack up.â
âNo.â
He grimaced with every move and rested an arm on his leg. âPrincess, so help meâŚâ
Katriel growled. âI wish youâd never won that contest.â
âThe feelingâs mutual.â He rubbed his diaphragm at the spot where her elbow had struck him. âMy life would be a lot simpler as a squire instead of a bodyguard.â
She jerked against his solid grip. Apparently, she needed to fall on him harder next time. âDoesnât that frustrate you? Living safe inside a castle everyday while your friends die in battle?â
He didnât look at her, but she saw the twinge of his jaw. âIâm where Iâm supposed to be.â
Katriel huffed. âWell, Iâm not satisfied standing to the side. Iâm enlisting in the army.â
âTo what purpose?â Â His voice rose as his lungs began to function normally again. âWhat more can you do that isnât being done?â
âI can fight for my people. Alongside them. Another sword to fight. Another body to push backââ
âTo die?â He glared at her. âBecause that is all you will accomplish. You are a princess of Allowenââ
âAnd Iâm fifth in line for the throne. There is nothing I can do for them politically.â Katriel gripped her scabbard. âThis is all I have. Why was I trained to use this if Iâm not allowed to fight? There must be more I can do than sit in a castle and let my people water the fields with their blood. What is Elihuâs plan in all this?â
Misael drew in a deep breath and clenched his eyes shut. Eventually, he shook his head. âI donât know. Only Elihu does.â
Katriel closed her eyes. âIf there was another prophet, maybe Father would listen to him. He would know what to do.â
âHow long has it been since the last?â
âFather was sixteen when the last prophet died, and Elihuâs been silent ever since. I donât understand why.â She shook her head. âWhat if it’s Elihuâs design that I join the battle?â
âThen not even I will be able to hold you back.â He straightened and pushed her toward the wall. âBut until thenâŚâ
âAre you really going to make me climb back up?â
He crossed his arms. âYou came down; you can go back up.â
Katriel glared, but the stony expression on Misaelâs face said sheâd lost this round. She sighed and grabbed the rope. âWhatever you say, kitten.â A smirk crept across her face at the memory of when he’d missed a match to save a kitten. But that was a happier time. A peaceful time.
As she climbed, the red glow on the horizon caught Katrielâs eye. Elihu, save us. Please hear us.
She didnât know how, when, or if, her prayer would be answered, but she knew she would do everything she could to defend Allowen. One way or another.
And next time, not even Misael would stand in her way.
I like the humor in this battle of wills. Great story!
Haha, yeah. The banter was fun to write. Thank you.
“Apparently, she needed to fall on him harder next time”
*DIES*
Yes, that is quite the idea. Glad you enjoyed it.
Humorous and thought provoking. Well done!
Thank you. I’m glad you found it entertaining and something to think about.
“Legends of Allowen”
Does this mean that there will be more? I loved it! This isn’t a princess shirking her duties or escaping a betrothal or pining after some peasant. She really wants to help her nation and doesn’t see any way she can in her current position. And her and Misael’s relationship seems so dynamic! Plus Elihu.. the name reminds me of the younger guy in the book of Job in the Bible. Is there something to that?
Great job! I hope you do more!
Hi, Selina. Yup, I decided for this season all the stories would take place in the same world but would follow a different character. However, you might see the same character or find Easter Eggs referencing a future story. I’m glad you enjoyed this and hope you’ll like the next ones just as much.
Okay, I love these twođđ Cant wait to read more about them!
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed them. Their banter was fun to write. You’ll see Misael again in “Elihu’s Light” and potentially in another story in the future.
