A Christmas Equation

By Hannah Carter

β€œMa’am, we have an issue.” My mousy assistant Anne cleared her throat, approaching my leather chair.

I waved my pen at her before I continued counting sums. β€œGo on, then.”

β€œIt’s…” Anne gulped. β€œScrooge.”

I peered over the edge of my pince-nez glasses. β€œWhat about Scrooge? He’s sufficiently corrupted.” I tapped his name on my list. β€œA bad soul, ready to be plucked for the Boss, just like Marley before him.”

Anne fiddled with her skirts. β€œWell, the spirits are saying it’s something of a Christmas miracle.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. β€œHe’s donating money. Being good to his employees. One report here says that he’s singing.” Anne paused, a letter in hand. β€œSinging… to a frog?”

I snatched the missive, written by one of my most trustworthy lackeys. β€œI have a quota to meet, Anne. I will not let Ebenezer Scrooge throw my tallies off. Not so close to the end of the year!” I crumpled the paper and stormed toward the door.

Anne raced after me. Her boots clicked against the hardwood. β€œMa’am? Where are we going?”

I grabbed a shawl off the coat rack and wrapped it around my shoulders. β€œOut for a little Christmas cajoling, dear.”

Snow crunched under my feet as I stomped up to the house of one B. Cratchit. Sounds of merriment leaked out of the home.

Disgusting.

I banged on the door.

Anne shifted nervously behind me. β€œMa’am,” she mumbled. β€œAccording to the spirits, there might be a Heavenly Virtue here.”

β€œNonsense,” I snapped. β€œI’ve never met one of those so-called personifications of the virtues. A beacon of love and light, here to counterbalance corrupting influencesβ€”rubbish.”

β€œBut I’d never met a personification of Deadly Vices until you.” Anne cleared her throat.

β€œThe Boss takes an active interest in souls. He wants all of them. Hence, I exist.” I snorted. β€œPeople are inherently self-absorbed; unleashing their darker natures is easy. No Virtue could fix themβ€”hello.” I stared down at a small child with a crutch. So small, so fragileβ€”so easy to crush beneath my heel.

β€œHello,” the boy squeaked.

β€œYou’re not a frog,” I muttered.

He furrowed his brow. β€œWhat?”

β€œNothing.” I straightened. β€œI need to see Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge. Now.”

β€œMr. Scrooge is helping Papa carve the ham,” the tot replied.

β€œWell, tell Mr. Scrooge he has thrown off my entire count by coming here. I need to make sure my balances are in check for the end-of-year report.” Souls had to be accounted for, sins all tallied up to prove my effectiveness.

β€œAh.” The boy stared at me with something akin to pity.

The insolence. β€œSummon Mr. Scrooge. I don’t have time to waste on someone as pathetic and ugly as you.” Perhaps if I inflamed his insecurities enough, he might one day be in my ledgersβ€”

β€œI like the way I look.”

I blinked. β€œWhat?”

β€œI said, I like how I look. Do you like yourself?”

β€œWhy wouldn’t I?” I patted my cheek. β€œI’m beautiful. Aren’t I beautiful, Anne?”

Anne dipped her head. β€œYes, ma’am. Stunning.”

I smiled, turning my gaze back to the boy. β€œSee?”

β€œI don’t mean on the outside.” The boy leaned against his crutch. β€œI mean, are you happy? It’s Christmas, and you’re trying to harass Mr. Scrooge about sums and figures.”

β€œWell, sums and figures are my job!”

Warmth trickled out of the house as the boy and I stared at each other. His eyes softened. β€œThe lady’s cold.”

I turned around. Anne shivered, her teeth clattering.

β€œDo you want to come in?” The boy hobbled out of the way. β€œMum’s got hot cider ready. You can have a plate of ham, too. Mr. Scrooge said to invite everyone and share the blessings.”

Anne wrapped her arms around herself like that might offer her protection from the temperature.

I pulled my shawl tighter around me. β€œWe’re fine.”

β€œIt’s Christmas.” The boy held out his hand.

Anne regarded me warily as she put her hand in his. β€œOne cup of cider couldn’t hurt.” She tilted her head. β€œRight, ma’am?”

She disappeared inside, and in a moment, I heard her giggling gratitudes.

I huffed. β€œReally. Now you’ve stolen my prime selfish soul and my assistant. I’m getting very annoyed with you.”

β€œThere’s always room for one more at the table,” the boy said.

I gazed past him at the crowd. β€œYour table is very small, and you already have too many guests.”

He chuckledβ€”suddenly sounding much older and far less squeaky. β€œWhy do you insist on being ignorant?”

I clutched my chest. β€œExcuse me?”

He took my hand. His gentle touch filled me with cozy feelingsβ€”the sort that bring good tidings of joy. β€œChristmas isn’t about logistics; it’s about love. It doesn’t matter if there’s enough chairs for everyone, just that we have everyone.”

Ugh. What a saccharine sentiment. If he broke into song, I’d bash him over the head with his own crutch. I shivered underneath my shawl. β€œWhy would you want me in there?”

His eyes sparkled like the most blindingly overbearing stars in the night sky. β€œBecause my Boss is a sums and figures Man, too. He doesn’t want even one out of ninety-nine to miss out on the love of Christmas.”

My heart stuttered. I caught sight of Scrooge, my prized soul. He threw his head back and belly-laughed at something Anne said. β€œEven me?” I asked softly.

β€œEven you. You’re why I exist.” The boy squeezed my fingers. β€œYou spend your whole life worrying about souls without ever getting to love them.” His tiny arms embraced me. β€œDon’t you want to be loved, Lily?”

How oddβ€”I’d never told him my name.

I stepped over the threshold.

β€œMa’am!” Anne whirled over to me, shoving a cup of cider into my hands. We shared a smile, and the boy winked at me as he settled into a chair.

A Heavenly Virtue, come to love even me?

Must have been a Christmas miracle.

    • Thank you so much!! And nothing is complete without a Muppets tease, as I like to say… apparently. πŸ€£πŸŽ„β„οΈ

  • I absolutely ADORED this! I love A Christmas Carol so this was a delight to read. Also, I’m so in love with your personification of the Vices haha. OF COURSE Tiny Tim would be a Heavenly Virtue πŸ₯Ή

    • Awww, thank you so much, Olivia!! πŸ₯° I’m glad you love the personification of the Vices! I really enjoyed playing around with the idea…and especially incorporating it into A Christmas Carol. 😊 And Tiny Tim could be nothing else. He’s too precious πŸ˜ŒπŸŽ„β„οΈ

    • Awww, Rae!! Thank you so much. πŸ₯° I’ll pass you a tissueβ€”that’s so sweet that it made you tear up! πŸ˜Šβ„οΈπŸŽ„

  • I love the direction you took this story, you really added a nice perspective to a story that has been around for years. AMAZING!!!!

    • Awww, thank you so much, Isabella!! πŸ₯° Ooh, love the Screwtape comparison! I’m actually reading Mere Christianity right now just because CS Lewis is one of my favorite authors and theologians of all time. πŸ˜Šβ„οΈπŸŽ„

    • Hahaβ€”the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear…or reading A Christmas Carol flash fiction! πŸ€£β„οΈπŸŽ„ Thank you so much, Rose!! πŸ₯°

    • Awww, thank you so much, Brooke! πŸ₯° Yep, that was definitely the nod–good catch! πŸ˜Šβ„οΈπŸŽ„

  • Excellent, you really made me feel something towards the end. The only thing that would have made it better is if you worked in a Bill Murray reference ;)

    • Awww, thank you so much, fourwalker2!! I’m so glad that it made you feel something. 😊 Hahaha, aw, man–that is an opportunity missed! I’ll just have to write a sequel next year to work in a Bill Murray reference! lol πŸ˜Šβ„οΈπŸŽ„

  • This is wonderful. I love the Christmas Carol story in general, and you know I LOVE the Muppets version (so many wonderful nods to that). But it was interesting to see it from a different angle. Awesome, Hannah. <3

    • Awwww, thank you so much, Mariella!! πŸ₯° And yes…we both agree in Muppet superiority. Truly nothing is better than incorporating a singing frog into everything. xD πŸ₯° Glad that you enjoyed this different angle!! πŸ₯°β„οΈπŸŽ„

  • It really would be just like a Deadly Vice to deny the existence of a Heavenly Virtue despite their very own existence, bahaha! I relate to Lily’s accounting anxiety – trying to ‘close out the books’ at years’ end always is terribly stressful, and her boss doesn’t seem like the best manager either! Maybe after some personal growth, the Virtue could get her a job where he works instead, hehe. ^_^

I really enjoyed the back-and-forth exchange between the Vice and Virtue – I thought you did very well balancing the Heavenly Virtue’s comments/actions to where he didn’t quite reveal himself right away. Also…this line of dialogue, “You spend your whole life worrying about souls without ever getting to love them.” I could feel the sadness and pity and purity in their comment, just amazing work.

    • Awww, thank you so much, James!! I love that line of dialogue you pointed out, too. It’s one of my favorites in the piece! But Lily’s definitely not got the best boss…you could almost say…he’s probably kind of devilish. heh ;)

  • It’s funny how Scrooge has no idea that a battle for his very soul is taking place just a short distance away, he’s just sipping cider and having a good time, lol

Really well-written story! I like that you even humanize the Vice at the end β€” it definitely gives them more depth!

I wonder how Anne possibly found *that* Assistant gig though… maybe on Monster? Hehe.

    • Bahaha, after the night he’s had, I doubt even if Scrooge *had* noticed Lily, he’d act surprised. “Oh, another spirit here? Yuck. What do you want this time?” xD Thank you so much, Nicodemus!! ^_^

    • Hannah, I really enjoyed this story! It felt a bit like the Screwtape Letters meets A Christmas Carol. Would that make this…The Scroogetape Letters? Anyway, it’s always fun to see a familiar tale told from a different point of view!

As for the emoji holiday special contest, I really have no clue at the moment, but I will continue to mull it over. My current best guess is that these represent the Wookie family from the Star Wars Holiday Special, but I don’t think that’s quite it…
